Los periodistas de ‘Séptimo día' realizaron un informe especial sobre el turismo sexual que se presenta en diferentes ciudades del país. ‘Sexoturismo' es el nombre del revelador informe que pone en evidencia la proliferación de este fenómeno.

HOW ABOUT THIS TOPIC from the AMBASSADOR for children org helping Colombia

http://www.ambassadorsforchildren.org/www2/?action=Trips/details.php&t...

Program Starts Saturday, August 1st, 2009
Program Ends Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Trip Leader: J.R. Pico

Visit a magical, romantic city on the Caribbean Coast of South America: Cartagena de Indias which was founded in 1533 by the Spanish. You will be awestruck by the magnitude of the still existing infrastructure of the Spanish rule which ended in 1810. Explore the grandeur of the more than ten miles of walls surrounding the old city. Enjoy the fortress of San Felipe and the balconies of the colonial streets. The city has the added luxury of being on the equator where the sun bathes the beaches and islands 365 days of the year with a constant temperature between 85 - 95 degrees.

Unfortunately, in this Caribbean treasure within 30 minutes of the bustling, tourist metropolis, live countless children who know nothing of the division of their city into two worlds. One world is a vacation destination for the rich and the other one is a makeshift, poorly-constructed area. The children know nothing of the existence of the other or simply as a vague illusion of huge buildings so distant they are not reachable. Our humanitarian mission focus at this destination is to provide children the opportunity to receive an education who might not otherwise have one. We work with several sustainable projects which are explained in detail in the itinerary.

Colombian children just need a chance to have the same opportunities for education and health care as children in the rest of the world. This program reaches into the homes of children between the ages of 2 and 6 years and draws them into an educational environment that will give them hope for the future and a desire to be educated that they might never have encountered if not for this program.

Come experience the joy of removing the boundaries for these children so their city can become one. All will have the same opportunities to work together to build a better future.

I have also mentioned it in another thread here about this epidemic that is beating Thailand and thanks to our Colombian friends who love to advertise Colombia as a place for this type of tourism.

Monpirri, problems like these are better solved when the public is better informed. I'm with you on this one. Too bad for Thailand; but I would say that those who want to see Colombia more like Thailand in this regard should just go directly to Thailand. In the mean time, let's expose the problem for all to see. These types shun the light of day.

Thanks for your help Darloup.

Darloup, I agree with you and I disagree with you. I agree that sex tourism has been posted here on pbh before but now thanks to many of us who oppose to Colombia being the target of this business, the Colombian Government and the News media have begun to focus on this growing epidemic.

So I recommend that you watch it tonight and believe me it is going to be different from what you have seen here.

Ok, i watched it....hmmm...my thoughts:

1. an Expose on something Colombia which is totally legal..what kind of expose it that? colombian style, i guess.....
2. no mention of the percentage of colombian men who participate
3. photos of couples walking in Cartagena, with the implication they are hookers or prepagos, with out any apparent verification
4. prepagos with their own websites who make $$$
5. no mention of webporn or porn at all.......and the gringo factors such as running these business, clients, etc
6. cops directing gringos to where they can find hookers
7. Cartagena is a tourist town...without tourism, its a pueblo.......the lower paid workers in this town survive on the commission fee economy.....everyone who refers someone to someone expects and usually recieves a commission fee....whether its taxistas, meseros, people on the streets, etc...
8. Medellin, being much larger, probably has more sex workers than Cartagena? Remember, Cartagena is a one horse town....and the area referred to in the expose is limited to about 5 small barrios...
9. Italians, Italians, Italians, Italians.............
10. the question to the italian ST featured: what would you say if colombianos went to italy to have sex with italian women? .....ah...so this is what the expose is all about...colombian men are not happy with other men "taking their women".....and here i thought they were not happy with prostitution etc....

thats enough for now.....

would someone please tell me what the interview with the boat operators was all about? i saw a cruise ship in the background when the interview started, but my chinese food was delivered at this time, so i missed most of it..........

Septimo Dia documentary it's a two part series, part two continues next week.
The documentary targeted Cartagena as the center of the action and Medellin got a break, I say a break because Medellin is the most popular place for tourists from pbh, and of course, we all know that they travel there for the scenery only and for Botero's work.

m_c, it's a multi-part doc, maybe they answer some of the loose ends you pointed out next time.

I caught half of it, and the conclusion that they explicitly draw is this
"Colombia is emerging as a top sex-tourist destination"

and they didn't say whether it was a good or bad thing, but the way they shot it seemed to imply that it was not desirable.

The boat guys made money ferrying groups of tourists to the nearby islands.

The boat guys also got tourists asking to hook them up with the painted ladies of the night. To which they would always answer "I've got 'em, how many do you want, what kind etc".

At the very end of the show, the presenters said "we're not presenting any judgement, just showing the reality."

The enduring image for me is the one they showed a couple of times -- the Colombiana in a nice short dress and heels, and the gringo walking alongside her in grungy shorts and flip flops.

"this may seem a strange post but it is not...when in colombia men need to be aware that colombia women may try to be seductive and entice a travelling gringo to have sex with them..to be forewarned is to be forearmed..." -- pow wow

I didn't catch the boat scene, other than when the prepago (or perhaps the presenter) is explaining about how "they come in on boats and cruises" (the sex tourists).

With the amount of dough these girls bring in, it's no wonder they become prepagos. And is it just me, or were some of those man-like women just disgusting? ... and they still make tons of $$$. There must be some very desperate blokes who travel to colombia.

I watched about half of it.

Prostitution will exist no matter what and it's good that it is legal because then real health and safety programs. If not, there is a wall between the people involved and the government.

I can understand why many people are disgusted by Colombia having this type of reputation. Everyone has their ideal of what they want their country to be. Trying to whitewash it doesn't do service to anyone except the egos of those proud Colombians who want the world to think that Colombia is different from what it is. Keeping it more open and legal makes it easier to find the minors who do it. If the police can engage the legal girls, it can help them find the young ones.

The most positive thing that can be done is to make sure there are oppertunities for young women so that some don't have to do it to survive.

Beam me up Scotty; No intelligent life here.

prostitution is legal and I do not think that it should be different. It is a business, you are right.
But, to become one of the main sex tourism destination is annoying.
No idea about how to solve the problem if not giving the poor people an opportunity to earn their life differently.

Now tell me who is the dumbfool paying 2 millions to sleep with that fugly student from Santa Marta in Medellin...
