"BOGOTA, Colombia - Colombia is set to become the first Latin American country to give established gay couples full rights to health insurance, inheritance and social security under a bill passed by its Congress.

The plan approved Thursday is expected to take effect soon. It is backed by the country's conservative President Alvaro Uribe."

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

Maybe it's an attempt to quickly (stupidity,...like this statement) garner the support of the libero-commi-pinko-faggo-chaoto-neurotic democratic party of the United States of America (NORTH,...OF COURSE)

Hey, that's great! Gay marriage is allowed here in Spain, too. I'm glad to see Colombia is taking this progressive step. I'm sure it will anger a few regressive, homophobic, hate-mongering, expat gringos. To that element, I say:

¡QUE OS JODÁIS, CABRONES!

I'm all for any committed couple having rights of inheritance etc. But I hope Uribe's largesse will be extended to siblings who live together, platonic friends who depend upon one another or any other type of domestic partnership. Or is he, typical politico, just trying to curry favour with the shrill, manipulative and ultimately nihilistic 'gay' lobby?

Gay Rights It is so typical of US Americans to link every move made in Colombia to their country, how ignorant. The gay rights bill has been proposed for a few years now, it was an issue on boths of the last presidential campaigns and no, Uribe was not the first to propose it. Actually it was most of Uribe´s supporters in Congress who were against it, and it was the left wing parties in Colombia who have been pushing for it, for years now. See guys, we also have a Congress here, and they are the ones who make the laws. And yes and it is also as corrupt as the US Congress, and it also bows to political and economical interests, but in this case it was and uphill battle for the guys in there.

Simon says on Jun 16, 2007, 07:53:

I think it's fine that they get those rights, just don't have them adopting kids and getting married.

Civil unions, yes. Marriage, a sacred act between a MAN and a WOMAN...NO!

Simon In Colombia there is religious freedom, so "sacred" acts can only be allowed by the particular churches, not by the government. These civil unions, basically grant the same rights as common law marriages.

Gay adoptions On the rare occasions Simon and I cross paths, we seldom get on. However, very frequently I find myself in sympathy with what he writes. And this is one such time- Simon, I couldn't agree with you more on this issue!

I'm sick to death of well-heeled, petulant minorities trying to manipulate society for their own selfish agendas.

In the UK this year, a law was passed that compels Church adoption agencies to hand over the children in their care to homosexual couples. I gather the same state of affairs pertains in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

And to publicly condemn the wider adoption of children by homosexuals has been effectively criminalised in Britain. It's a 'hate crime' apparently. Mind you, you can mock and insult Christians as much as you please. That's 'freedom of speech'.

I'm all for homosexual couples being as safe, secure and contented as anyone else. But I do not think children should be the guinea pigs in this particular experiment in social engineering. They're kids, not fashion accessories. And they need a mum.

This left-liberal mania for chipping away at Judaeo-Christian civilisation and foisting their own rootless dogmas on the world will make orphans of us all.

Disgusting Debate Gay marriage is sickening, this is a disgusting debate. What next? Sex with consenting children? Animals? Marriage is for the support of pro-creation of children. Gay marriage seeks not equality but to destroy this country civilisation.

CaritadeAngel says on Jun 16, 2007, 11:05:

Well, its ok for Gays in Colombia
But not journalists or trade unionists. Funny ol' world, isn't it?

Gay marriage is basically a legal contract for the sharing of property: tehcnically speaking, I could get together with a female pal and do the same thing, and we wouldn't have to have sex with each other to make it a valid contract. In no way is this kind of arrangement (in my mind) anyway, the same as a heterosexual marriage, which is bound up with the creation of life and spiritual unity.

I agree with Kalder: kids need a mum (they also need a dad). I would never consider having kids if I wasn't married to the father. Children need a good male-female balance (just my humble opinion). I would adopt kids by myself, but I would never give birth to my own. We do not have the "right" to children: they aren't things, they are people.

Goin_south&Monpirri-Don't Forget, Regarding US Political Parties and your description of the US Democratic Party(commi-pinko-faggo,inc), to include in the Republican Party Congress Members(now EX) such as Republican Mark Foley(ex) who I am sure we are all familiar with-familiar with his Page Boy Antics as well. LOL But hey, thought this was about Gays and Uribe in Colombia.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/29/AR2006092901574.html

Rubito's right ...Uribe supported this since his re-election campaign, which predated all the recent scandals and whatnot.

This isn't gay marriage, as has already been said. It recognizes certain benefits to gay unions, but the word "marriage" isn't anywhere. Not that it needs to be...though it might be, as it wouldn't bother me at all either.

I may not agree with homosexuality on a personal level, but legally speaking I have no right to impose my own views on those who do, and they (and their unions, which is the point) have the right to be treated equally by the state.

It's not my business what two consenting adults decide to do with their lives, and it shouldn't be anyone else's either.

CaritadeAngel:

"Well, its ok for Gays in Colombia

Sigh...this law isn't going to automatically make everything "ok" for Gays, and the problems that journalists and trade unionists have to face aren't so simple, nor due to lack of laws either. But whatever...

Downfall of Judaeo-Christian civilisation? Well, Robespierre, Hitler, Stalin, Ceauşescu, et al have taken a good crack at it. Just glad there were some who thought it was worth maintaining.

The alternative to it, as history makes clear, is dystopia.
