But the story itself stands on its own, as a short tale of the fortunes and misfortunes of a group of victims of violence.

Though the narrator likes to make a few generalizations too many...for poetic/cinematic effect, I suppose.

Even if the little details bother nitpickers like me, I congratulate them for their work, in any case.
