Colombia, the disgraceful appalling truth

It started raining in NYC so my walk was cut short.

First of all, please let me apologize to all my Colombian brothers whether they be Colombians in Colombia, anchor Colombian babies in the USA, gringo visa brides and Colombians raised and living in USA (me) BUT I really believe this video is a MUST SEE, to clarify questions regarding salaries in our beloved country and why if given the opportunity nearly all would run outta there.
Some one forgot to tell Wilfred (cachaco in video) about the over one million per month average salary in Bogotá. This guy works for the capital city for the sanitation dept. but only makes 427 mil al mes, where is the other one million?
NO! that is not his starting salary, he's been working this job for many many years.

Tasco, If one were so inclined, this link would be a good place to start digging:

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/...

Use "Ctrl F" to find the word "world" and you'll see global per capita purchasing power parity at around $10,000 USD.

If a person lacking skills in the U.S. can earn $7 to $10 an hour just for showing up at work, they're already close to double the world average. They're also eligible for a number of benefits and pay next to nothing for them.

I have no idea if Toneloc's 5% figure is correct, but if you take into account that a couple billion people survive on less than $2 USD per day, the statement that the poor in the US (and probably Western Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada) are better off than 85%, 90% or 95% of the rest of the world's population isn't too far-fetched.

Tinto - I see you're a thinking man.

Doesn't take much common sense to come up with the 5% estimate, nor does it take much research. The annual minimum wage in the USA is approx. $15,000, or $1,300 monthly. That's not even the average annual US salary. Put that minimum wage up against China, India, Brasil, Indonesia, Pakistan, Banladesh, Nigeria, Russia, and Japan, and you'll see where I'm going with this. By the way, that's 50% of the world population right there.

According to the US Census Bureau, as of 2006, (2007's data hasn't been released yet), the US average annual household income was approx. $48k.

We got it much better financially here in the USA than MANY parts of the world. Squeezing a dollar just hasn't been our thing yet, which is why they say money doesn't translate to happiness.

Now, let's get back to Colombia.

Inequality Has Run Amok. Do U.S. Leaders Care?

Breaking Politics News

By Dmitri Iglitzin and Steven Hill

When pets are poisoned by imported pet food or U.S. attorneys are fired under suspicious circumstances, Congress gears up hearings and vows quick action. A far greater scandal, however, has hardly gained the interest of legislators or the presidential candidates. That is the increasing wealth gap between the rich, the middle class and the poor, which is reaching alarming proportions.

The top 10 percent of income earners in the United States now owns 70 percent of the wealth, and the wealthiest one percent owns more than the bottom 95 percent, according to the Federal Reserve. In 2005, the top 300,000 Americans enjoyed about the same share of the nation's income -- 21.8 percent -- as the bottom 150 million.

New York is an especially bleak case study. The top fifth of earners in Manhattan now makes 52 times what the lowest fifth makes -- $365,826 annually compared with $7,047 -- roughly comparable to income disparity in Namibia.

Meanwhile, the ratio of average CEO-to-worker pay in the U.S. shot up from 301-to-1 to 431-to-1 in 2004. The average CEO now earns substantially more in one day than the average worker earns all year. Adding insult to injury, taxpayers actually give tax breaks to corporations for those salaries, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.

In a country founded on the principle that "all men are created equal," this stark and growing economic inequality has become a third rail of politics. Almost no one in political leadership touches it for fear of being accused of inciting class warfare.

But we've reached a point where the "land of equality" has become a very unequal place. Government has an important role to play in restoring another fine American value: fairness.

A small first step would be passing the Income Equity Act, denying corporations a tax deduction for excessive CEO salaries (defined as pay greater than 25 times the company's lowest full-time worker). They could still pay CEOs whatever they wished, but taxpayers would no longer subsidize it. That would create some downward pressure on executive income while saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

More substantive would be a fix to Social Security's dirty little secret of favoring the rich: Annual wage income above $94,200 is completely untaxed by Social Security. While an average worker pays 6.2 percent of her income to Social Security, a CEO earning $1 million pays only 1 percent of his salary. As is, only 83 percent of all wages are subject to Social Security taxes, so this would increase annual revenues by nearly 20 percent, or $100 billion a year, keeping Social Security solvent.

Other worthy proposals include increasing the minimum wage, providing child care for working parents, expanding health care and lowering college costs. But the most direct way to address inequality is to reimpose higher income tax rates. Current rates are extremely low, historically-speaking. Under President Dwight Eisenhower's Republican administration, the maximum marginal tax rate was 87 percent. The Reagan tax cut of 1981 dramatically lowered this to 50 percent, then again to 28 percent in 1986. Since then, no surprise, our nation has seen a steady rise in wealth disparity.

It is long past time for our political leaders to put aside the scandal du jour and take urgently needed action to slow if not reverse our nation's growing economic inequality.

Maybe the RCN piece doesn't fit your warped version of Colombian reality, but I think most folks here with common sense would see it as fairly accurate and common situation throughout the country. Everyone doesn't live like this, but many do.

"Yeah, we really have it figured out here in America and up in Canada, we pay the goddamned garbagemen $30 an hour and musicians have to scrounge under the table for less than minimum wage! Real great set of priorities up here!"

So what, now you're only in it for the money??? Sounds like you made a bad choice. NY Sanitation is always hiring......LOL!!!

Reality check. I know this might sting your profession, but I'm pretty positive that the overwhelming majority of people would choose to pay a decent garbageman $30/hour over any musician 10x out of 10. Some would say, if you can't breathe the stench-filled or contract whatever disease due to trash-strewn streets, it wouldn't matter what song you're playing and how great it sounds.

Edit: I found out that bonos alimenticios are available through "subsidios de desempleo' a program run by Presidencia de la Republica. However, this is just part of unemployment benefits and it appears that only those who have lost their job recently are entitled to this type of thing. The sad bit is that getting the benefit takes time, and by the time the claim is processed many are no longer considered "recently unemployed".

Mum's past retirement age but with no pension. (My in-laws died before having completed her quotas). There's one child in that family too. Economists use the Gini Coefficient to measure income inequality (or wealth).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gini_coefficient

It´s basically a ratio between 0 and 1. With 0 indicating complete income equality (ie everyone in a country has the same income) and 1 indicating complete inquality (1 person makes all the income, everyone else makes none)

The Gini in the US has increased over the last 40 years, and is higher than most developed countires-- though it´s still below Colombia and much of Latin America -- which still has some of the highest rates of income inequality in the world.

The following is a UN list from 2007 comparing the richest 10% of a countries people´s income to the poorest 10%. I don´t know how accurate this is, and it´s missing a lot of Africa. But, south america, colombia especially is extemely unequal no matter how you look at it.

Then you can choose:
Bono de alimentacion: Para usar en supermercados de cajas de compensacion (Cafam, Comfamiliar etc.)
Bono de educacion: Cubre matricula y pension. Si el monto es inferior al subsidio, la plata restante se da en alimentos.

Rubito, Colombian food is full of chemicals too. Thats how they get those fruits and vegetables to look so pretty.

"In Colombia the use of pesticides/fungicides is prevalent, widespread exposure is expected, and toxic effects from accidental exposure have been documented. It has been reported by Vargas and Vallejo (4) that organochloride insecticide residues in milk of humans and cows in certain areas of Colombia exceed regulatory limits. Increased risk of hemangioma is detected among children born to a population exposed occupationally to pesticides (5). Therefore, long-term health problems from environmental exposure to pesticides/fungicides may exist in Colombia. This problem should be identified from systematic scientific studies, and exposed workers are an appropriate group to conduct the study. Workers in Colombia who are exposed to hazardous pesticides under current conditions should be monitored using relevant biomarkers to provide early warning signals for potential health effects"

yeah well most colombianas will keep on avoiding you because of your hooker preferences, if you sy hooker i think in aids and disgusting thoughts ,later on all will be reflected on you , man hooker=digusting and pathetic..

Im a decent girl, focused on my house, my studies,my husband and all the stuff people is scared of, Im down to earth and i do believe in love..guess you laugh at the idea of love elmo, seems you only want one thing...

one speaks of love and the typical latin guy goes away scared , in that aspects norwegians are really cool ,my husband devotes me everyday of his life and loves me ,not to mention Im the one that makes most decisions here because he cares only for what makes me happy and he feels bad if im not feeling OK with something.

About gringos I dont know, guess only poor desperate colombianas are willing to do whatever guess because they still think all americans are rich , but if you got some culture and watch bbc on a daily basis like me, youll see how bad some americans got to struggle with the current economical situation, inflation, unemployment and all that ! of course average colombian poor class girl wont talk to you not even english wants only your money.

About me Im proud my life is the way it is ,in a little cute town ,deers, squirrels and birds all around ,forest and the fjord when i go to my balcony and a life centered on family and all the good values on should direct its life to and no im not old im 21 and my husband is 26 and currently we just focus in our future and developing he his company and me my career...

so please stop generalizing about colombianas, i got million of examples ,in my family for example my cousin lives in new york too independent working for NBC as a producer, my cousins are in london studying english and afterwards they will start their masters degrees and they come from cartagena...

and WEB the worst thing that happens to you here is if you crash into a moose or something...cannot compare murder rates from bogota to the ones in europe aint possible.

the guettos here haha is asylum seekers those are the poorest persons ,people from afghanistan ,irak and pakistan..this is packed with them as long as they behave they can go around here, but since the prices here are appallingly high they barely can go through, norway the land when a kilo of meat costs 130 usd!! you cannot beat that hahaha
