juanalejo says on Dec 2, 2005, 06:55: What a surprise GIB knows somebody high up who has told him how bad things in Colombia really are. This time the Stock Market. I guess he must be right and prestigious magazines such as The Economist must be wrong.

pauli says on Dec 2, 2005, 08:05: the colombian market is certainly volatile... ...gib is right. the point is it depends what else you have in your portfolio, and what your objectives are (i.e. how much risk you can afford to take) if you are a US-based investor to have 5% or so of your total assets in Colombian market would be probably be ok, depending on the circumstances. ElPadrino1 says on Dec 2, 2005, 10:24: Remember Mexico of the 80s????????????? For those that don't I will recap what transpired: many ex-Pats(canadians, americans, germans)invested in Mexico's Market--huge gains were being made on Stock, CDs(rates like 35%)Halfway thru the game in the late 80s, then President Salinas(and his brother Raul- a Thief) decided to change the investment rules! Whereas at the onset, the Foreign investors could put their Money into the Mexican Market in Dollars and withdraw in Dollar amounts, the Salinas de Gotari Brothers changed the withdrawal rules and the Foreigners could ONLY withdraw their Money in Pesos. Of course, each Investor lost a LOT of money in this Transaction from Dollars to Pesos. The Salinas Brothers were RUN out of the Country, to Cuba and other places with TONS of Money made from tricks such as this! Not saying this will happen in Col only but in ANY Country with a Non transparent investment mechanism. And is there ANY governemnt agency inplace to scrutinize the Industry? If not, proceed with a caution. My US Based investments had a $7000 Appreciation the last 5 days--Safe also. Why flirt with danger? In the past many years ago, with what I lost in Foreign Stock Markets, I could have bought a very nice Home in Santa Barbara in Strata 6. Learn from my hard luck! I wish it never happened but it did. If you have to invest, look into Reputable US Based Mutual Funds investing in Foreign companies, sure the appreciation may not be as high(as with individual stocks) but you will sleep better at night. Only my 2 cents.
