Colombia Rated No 4 on Lonely Planets Medical Tourism List

ColombiaNorth Americans and others head to Colombia for complex treatments performed by crack doctors at bargain rates. Cities such as Bogotá, Colombia's capital, offer a wide variety of medical treatments and operations. Specialities in Colombia include joint surgeries, and getting a hip replaced or "resurfaced" costs one-fifth of the cost of US hospitals, while the prosthetics used are of high international quality. Many Colombian doctors are foreign-trained as well. Colombia is also often visited for procedures that range from dentistry and cosmetic surgery to open-heart surgery

Thank god for the dentist, she was great. When I was in the USA I had to have my wisdom teeth pulled. $2500 for that. Thats crazy..... $800 for all my work here In Cali and I had alot of work done.....

My father was given 6 months to live by US doctors. He, without any treatment, has been here 8 years now and his health is fine. They took 20 samples of his prostate in the US and 18 came back positive. He was given a blood test here and they said he had no cancer. How many X-Rays have you had by a dentist in Colombia? I have never had one and in the US it is the first thing that they do. I receive much better medical care here than I ever did in the US and my father is an MD.

I remember telling a co-worker about how I got LASIK surgery in Colombia and how it was invented there. He still asked me about the quality of the doctors, if they were educated in the US, etc. I asked him why would they need to come to the US to be educated when LASIK was invented in Colombia in the first place?

Also, when my US optomologist saw the work they did on my eyes, he was marvelled by the job they did! But then he had to blow it by asking me if they gave me cocaine to calm the pain!

That is a horribly researched Lonely Planet article, to the point of being ridiculous. That being said, if you speak Spanish, I would rate Colombia highly.

But a destination like Bangkok simply has much more to offer as they are in the business of catering to foreigners, and in English, and they get far and away more medical tourism visitors than Colombia. I think in 2007 there were 58000 American visitors to Bumrungrad hospital alone.. There are a couple of Manila hospitals I would rate very highly for this type of work, also, which truly have state of the art equipment and a focus on helping foreigners in English.

If you can get to India and the Apollo hospitals, especially for work they specialize in (like hip replacement), that is a good alternative.

BS. Greg, some might think that but it's absolutely not true that most do. Most Americans don't view any other country (except perhaps France) as "inferior." We get labeled for the few loud morons (which every country has) but we don't all think that way.

For someone talking of "racism" methinks you might not want to label my entire country with such a broad brush. You might know some rednecks who're stunned at Colombia's quality of care, but that you know rednecks doesn't make us all hillbillies. It just means you know rednecks.

People in the USA can not believe that there are people in a Spanish speaking country that can be equal or better than in the USA! They say, you've got to be kidding! Go to Colombia to get good dental care? HA! What do they know there?

I have to ask you where do you base this assumption of what people in the USA think? Lived here for 41 years and have a huge circle of friends and I cannot tell you what all of them think. But for you to come on here and spew that crap is just funny because it shows you are just blowing hot air and you really dont have a point. Honestly, you will find great and horrible doctors in both countries. For a person in the states to be surprised that lasik surgery was invented in Bogota does not indicate the person is racist but rather uninformed. Your statement of what people in USA think is pretty racist in itself.
Simon, your co-worker sounds like a moron and probably doesn't represent what the majority of people in the states think.

GregYohn: They consider people that get educated in Spanish or other languages are not intelligent. You could see this how Soviet era nuclear Engineers could come to the USA and be treated as idiots here, so they got jobs as janitors, instead of using their professional skills.

I am so amazed at your insight of what you apparently don't know. Ever heard of Werner VonBraun? He was the rocket scientist who came from GERMANY to the states and was instrumental in the development of our space program. Please show me any document that supports the USA's ill treatment of the Soviet nuclear engineers. Those guys worked hand in hand with our own and were treated as equals and the USA was on the cutting edge of nuclear engineering at the time. Right now, the Soviet Nuclear engineers are leading the nuclear space race where chemical propulsion will soon be a thing of the past. Greg, why do you think people here buy German and Japanese cars? I am sure it is because we feel they are inferior and must produce an inferior product when compared to our own crap we produce.

Simon, I hear your anger -some people just don't get it. I will say this: I fokking HATE cocaine, never cared for it or understood the appeal of it. Again, Greg, people YOU know don't define America; that you know some morons doesn't mean we're all like that. There are a few bad apples in every country. But unlike you I don't define an entire country based on the worst of them/us. I suppose you also think all Mexicans are in the Sinaloa cartel, eh sport? All Irish have red hair?

How many Americans refused to hire or sell their homes to Blacks or Spanish people? Recently? None. We're in a recession, genius. Anyone would sell their home to anyone with money, big guy. Green is the important color. Something you'd know if (a) you could extricate your head from your ass; and (b) understood economics. I just sold my rental property to - get this! - a Puerto Rican! Ay Dios mio!!!! Y si, nuestra transaccion fue conducida en Espanol!!! And I'm both American and white. Shocking stuff, I know.

Oh wait, you're referring to stuff that happened in my country some 60 years ago. Cute. I mean that certainly applies to today, doesn't it? You know, mistakes can never be corrected and such. Good logic.

What do I think of Americans who don't learn Spanish for a one week vacation? Not much. It's a vacation. If they moved there and didn't speak the language that'd be different. But we're talking about vacation. Do people always learn an entire language for a one week vacation, Greg? Really? So every person in the US speaks English, do they? Say, every Mexican that comes here learns the language first? You've been to LA, have you? Ever tried to have a conversation in East LA in English, Greg? Doesn't work so well, does it? Are they "racist" for not learning my language? Don't just limit your criticism to my country. Let's apply your blighted logic wherever it applies.

This one is up there with the poster that stated there were whites only signs in the southeastern US in this day and age. If what you said was true, there would be lawsuits to the point that this would be huge news in this country. Those are isolated events and dont represent the majority. Lets say you are black and a company wouldnt hire you based on your color. You would have tons of lawyers lining up to take that case on contingency knowing they would win the case hands down. Equal opportunity is a big deal to employers because they know without a doubt, they would get their a$$ sued off period. Absolutely not because you dont have to disclose any religious affiliation when trying to get a job. The very fact that there are companies in Colombia that require the applicant to provide a picture of themselves holds Colombia back from being what it should be. If Colombia ever gets its Security & Transparency in Banking Shortcomings worked out, they will really move up the List as a Medical Tourism Destination as far as Dental, Optical & Plastic Surgery procedures. I think it will be a while for you see patients flocking there for CABG and various other Cardiac procedures, Orthopedic Procedures such as Hip replacement, Neuro surgery ect.

A Big reason India is high up on the list for Medical Tourism is there are a few Highly rated Hospitals there that either have received US JCOH or or working on receiving it. Once they have this JCOH Stamp of approval, many US based Insurance companies will pay for operations performed there. In Latin America, last I read there where only two countries working on JCOH approval and that was Brazil & Mexico.

Greg, Bush's handling (or not) of Katrina was one of the main reasons his popularity tanked so dramatically. The reason for that is b/c most Americans aren't racists as you're implying and were offended by Bush's inaction. So while I can't stand Bush I don't think he's a racist, just an idiot. And since idiots tend to do idiotic things, he mishandled Katrina. His Secretary of State and National Security Adviser were both black, his attorney was Mexican, etc. Racists don't usually appoint minorities to high-level posts.

But the point is that you're indicting America as racist, yet it was America's anti-racist sympathies which cost Bush his popularity - and to some extent I'm sure it cost the Republican Party some votes. Celebrities like Brad Pitt, Mike Meyers, Matt Damon, and other WHITES are doing tremendous charity work for the city, and people of all races are working together (now that Bush is gone) to rebuild the city. You are a cracker. Please stop saying Afro Colombians. That is like saying some of my best friends are black. Colombians are just Colombians no matter what color. Until YOU see people as just people without seeing the color of their skin, then you are truly racist.

Fortunately, I am from New Orleans, imagine that. Katrina was a tragedy, but ultimately the government screwed up the levies years before the hurricane. Plus, it was the governor who screwed the pooch in that instance, and the feds had to clean it up. Plus I have no sympathy for the people who stayed to loot. Magically my entire family left the state three days before the storm.

Plus, New Orleans has always had a high amount of mintorities. Especially black. New Orleans also has one of the first batch of Italians dropped in it. 200k sicilians. Plus Irish, German, Cuban, Spanish, and French. My city has always been poor, but the people are generally happy.

Simon,

Unfortunately most Colombians who go to the states tend to put on airs, and this is too the quality of their upbringing. Our country needs to leave the aititude behind that if you have a little more than someone else you are better. Good parents teach humility to their children no matter what the social strata. They do not teach them there are differences because of skin color and what street they live on.

Comparing hip replacements, and other more severe surgeries, is a completely different thing. You really need to look at the fatality rate of some of these countries during surgery. If you get a tooth yanked out, you can always get a fake one with little to no severe consequences...a hip, a liver, some bone marrow, that is a little different.
