Or more, maybe... Still, it was a poor idea that never really made any sense under current circumstances.

Bite your tongue Juancegomez.

I prefer to think of it as a good idea that was ahead of it time!

The Games/World Cup I know that every now and then they have some competitions in Cartagena, but if you have the World Cup, you are talking about massive amounts of people. A country or city would have to be really geared up for this one. With no Banditos of any kind anywhere. Just think if they could hold them like they do in Europe, in different cities. Some in Bogota, Cali, Medellin, and Cartagena. Sounds good, but like kinda impossible like jg says. Too bad for the country of Colombia. Do's anyone know how many people the games in Cartagena draw?

Juance is right, although most of us... would love to see Colombia host the World Cup, it was a non-starter. There was no way Colombia would get it over Brazil under the current circumstances. Although you have to give credit to all the groups on the margin of the law when we hosted the Copa America a couple of years ago and they declared a truce and pretty much stuck to it for the duration. It just goes to show how much futbol is ingrained into the society. Maybe it could be a foudation to an understading. Kind of like when North and South Korea presented a united team in the Olympics, or the Ping Pong Diplomacy in the seventies that was the catalyst for better relations between the USA and China.

Billyb, i have long proposed a futbol game to be played between the paras and FARC....but the twist would be that is be played on an existing mine field...last one standing wins!

Just my opinion...

The thing is MC, that most of the combatants on both... sides are either forcibly recriuted or join because there are no other economic alternatives. Most given, the chance, would take any other viable alternative. The game on the mine field should played by the jefes.

Out of interest does anybody know which stadiums they were thinking of using for the World Cup if they had a successful bid? Where would the final have taken place?

Simon I too would like to see that idea come true, but under current circumstances it's nothing more than a sick, sick joke.

Not just because of the conflict, which is also a problem but more of a contextual one (it will have to end one day, sooner or later). Rather, mostly because of a severe lack of multiple kinds of infrastructure.

And hey, we actually had more of a chance of setting up the 1986 World Cup (we did win that bid after all), but even that's a bit too generous of a thought...perhaps some day I'll be more than happy to bite my tongue, when circumstances change, but that day has yet to arrive.
