Colombia praised by UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner

Cheng-Hopkins, the UNHCR's assistant high commissioner for operations, said the number of people fleeing the conflict in Colombia continues to grow month after month. As with Colombians in need of protection in Ecuador, Cheng-Hopkins said tens of thousands more Colombians of concern to her agency have gone to such countries as Venezuela, Panama and Costa Rica.

Colombia, she said, is a "middle-income country, with strong state institutions." She said Colombia cannot be compared to some of the "failed" or "very weak" nations where UNHCR works elsewhere in the world.

In a separate statement issued June 13, Cheng-Hopkins said Colombia can ease its humanitarian tragedy with international help. Cheng-Hopkins said that during her visit to that Andean nation, she thanked the Colombian government for its stepped-up efforts to help Colombia's more than 2.5 million displaced people. She also noted a significant increase in Colombia's budget to help the country's displaced population.
