Colombia posters tackle sex abuse

Posters are a bit of an exaggeration, if you ask me..

Now, I would definitely welcome initiatives that provide people with more information about where sex abusers (for lack of a better term, since "offenders" is too generic) live, how they operate, and of course who they are. That would be great.

But posters...don't seem quite right.

Colombia posters tackle sex abuse

By Will Grant
BBC News, Miami

Billboards displaying the photos and personal details of men convicted of child sex abuse have gone up around the Colombian capital, Bogota.

The posters, which also give details of the men's crimes and sentences, are part of a campaign by city officials.

The plan is to have a total of 40 billboards which will also show the age and sex of their victims.

Lawyers for the prisoners had argued that the campaign violated the men's constitutional rights.

The first billboards, measuring 6m x 2m ( 20ft x 6ft) have been set up in locations across Bogota.

When the poster campaign was first announced, it was the subject of more than 30 unsuccessful legal challenges by the prisoners' lawyers.

The prisoners themselves were reported to have gone on hunger strike over the issue.

But the city commissioner in Bogota, Gilma Jimenez, was unrepentant for launching the billboard campaign.

"We had to break the silence. We had to break the indifference to these crimes. In Bogota there's a shameful and alarming number of cases of child sex abuse - we calculate as many as five cases a day with the vast majority of those crimes going unpunished," Ms Jimenez told the BBC.

Some estimates talk of 200,000 cases of child sex abuse a year in Colombia, more often that not committed within the family. Child rights groups say there is a big problem of denial over the issue within Colombia's conservative society, something the campaign's supporters say it is intended to tackle.

However, some human rights lawyers in Colombia have argued that the posters violate the constitutional rights of the men involved, regardless of their crimes.

Been saying it for years. sex abuse down here is socially acceptable behavior, as much as they say it isn't...

I'd go on with examples, but why repeat

I wonder what you think about this particular side of the issue though.

I don't believe these posters exist in the U.S. or in Europe, as far as I can tell.

Quote: sex abusers (for lack of a better term, since "offenders" is too generic).

Thats a good unbrella term, just add the word - child to sex abusers..

Colombia does have a problem with Child molestation but I think it not as prevalient as in other parts of the world.

Five a day,, ha, ha, ha,, probably more like 100 plus in a city the size of Bogota.

The abusers probably didn't think it was a problem 20 years ago but times change.

In 30 years Colombians will be North American Clones, then again, maybe not.

The billboards are OK with me. I think billboards is a better term than "posters". Gezzz, I thought PBH might be involved.

Not sure about their rights,, but small signs erected along the street at eye level might be more effective. Like the old Burma Shave signs only using the latest technology,, Hummmm, the signs is a better idea. More folks read them.

In the rural areas cars with loud speakers making the announcement while they drive down the street would be the best, plus folks could make a little money.

Sexual abuse of minors does not happen in Colombia. It's just a gringo issue because they live in a sick perverted society of freaks. Colombians are wholesome kind people who would never do anything like this.

It annoys me that there is quite a stink going on these posters, something about the rights of these offenders, so what about the little girls and boys they assaulted's rights? It's absurd, I say keep they up and put some more up!
John_stark, my oh my are you living in a lovely bubble...and by lovely I mean completely naive and totally wrong.

The posters don't exist over here (UK) occasionally the addresses of child molesters are leaked, resulting in the community taking matters into their own hands.

Here there is a massive problem with pedophiles, when they are convicted it is rarely the answer as soon enough they are out offending again, living in neighbourhoods where parents have no idea, in the summer here they go to the beaches and sit and watch the kids even though they may be tagged or know they are being watched by the police, most re-offend when out of prison.

It seems if the government can't deal with them then let the community, I don't believe in violence to resolve matters, but seen as there is no way to control their sick desires and them taking any given opportunty maybe death to them is the only answer.

I read somewhere that in France, they are given a drug that deadens their sexual appetite but when offenders are out they do not take their prescription, of course
