Colombia March Trade Surplus Rises To $299M Vs $215M

UPDATE: Colombia March Trade Surplus Rises To $299M Vs $215M

(Adds details)

BOGOTA (Dow Jones)--Colombia posted a surplus of $299 million in March compared with a surplus of $215 million in the same month in 2007, the national statistics department said Wednesday.

In the first quarter of this year, the country posted a surplus of $342 million compared with a $812 million deficit in the first quarter 2007.

The country's exports rose 25% in March to $2.99 billion from $2.39 billion in the same month a year ago.

Exports of oil, coal, coffee and nickel rose 47% in March from the same month in 2007 to $1.65 billion, while other exports saw a 6.2% rise to $1.34 billion.

The value of oil-product exports in January rose 92% to $1.02 billion, boosted by higher prices as the country's oil companies shipped 11% more in volume of oil and processed products out of the country. Coal exports rose 9.8% to $444 million in value but were down 14% to 6.99 million metric tons in volume.

In March, the country didn't export ferronickel because of a strike at the country's only mine, owned by BHP Billiton PLC (BHP), during the whole month. Coffee exports rose 35% to $185 million.

The largest trade surplus registered by Colombia in the first quarter was with Venezuela at $1.04 billion, followed by the U.S. at $719 million.

Those surpluses were partly offset by deficits of $738 million with China, $537 million with Mexico and $369 million with Brazil

Colombia says May trade surplus $223.1 mln.

BOGOTA, July 30 (Reuters) - Colombia's May trade surplus widened to $223.1 million from $90 million in the same month last year, the government's statistics office said on Wednesday.

The surplus was $747.7 million for the January through May period, according to a government statement that did not give a comparison figure.

May imports rose 21.5 percent to $3.36 billion versus May 2007. Imports in the first five months of the year rose 23.9 percent to $15.6 billion, the statement said.

The Andean country has attracted record foreign direct investment under popular President Alvaro Uribe. As a result, Colombia's peso has risen 9.8 percent against the dollar over the last twelve months, encouraging imports.

Uribe was re-elected in a 2006 landslide after cutting urban crime and spurring economic growth with his U.S.-backed crackdown on drug-running leftist rebels.
