Colombia Jun 2008 Ethanol Output Up 6.5% To 24.75 Mln Liters

Colombian ethanol production in June rose 6.5% to 24.75 million liters, from output in June 2007 of 23.25 million liters, the Colombian Sugar Cane Producers Association, or Asocana, said Thursday.

Total Colombian ethanol production from the beginning of the year through June, meanwhile, rose 13% to 146.2 million liters, Asocana said in its latest monthly report, a copy of which was sent to Dow Jones Newswires.

This compares to total Colombian ethanol output of 129.7 million in the January-June period of 2007, Asocana said.

Asocana has said further expansion of both production and land dedicated to ethanol is scheduled for Colombia in 2008, but the association has yet to release any official forecast for 2008 production.

Colombian ethanol production ended up 2.2% in calendar-year 2007, reaching 275 million liters, from production of 269 million liters in 2006. It was the third year of consecutive growth in output.

Colombia's rise in the ethanol industry has transformed the Andean country from a medium-sized sugar producer in the region to Latin America's second-largest ethanol producer, after Brazil, in a little more than three years.

Colombia registered the country's first lot of ethanol production from a pilot project in 2005, where output reached 29 million liters that year, according to Asocana figures.
