An article about the campaing

The phrase, "Colombia is passion," presented with a heart,
is now being used to market the country as a business and
tourist destination. A U.S.-based marketing firm under a
Colombian government/industry contract designed the logo.

...A yo, déjenme queto y no me jodan má! ...

has anybody pointed out that "Colombia is passion" is an akward phrase. Passion is a noun in this case and so is colombia. passionate is an adjective used to describe something like colombia. People will be able to understand the point, but it doesn't really flow.
When I worked in Korea they came up with a phrase to promote Korea during the world cup. The phrase was "Korea fighting". To them it meant "go Korea". I think it left alot of people scratching their heads. "Colombia is passion" is at least understandable.

Scratching... The two nouns make sense because they are being equated.

Colombia is (as in equals) passion.

They couldn't have got someone who spoke English naturally? The video is great but the stilted child taking with a rococo accent just doesn't work.

I agree Cockney, but I like when he said about Botero's painting. I think the Video is good I like it. I don't know what they were trying to project choosing a child voice, there must be something in there.

BTW: I don't get it Mario? original tense? passion? pain?

Desideria (Moderator) says on May 26, 2006, 05:17:

I think mario meant The original sense....of the word passion being "pain" or something related to suffering, like in the Passion Of Jesus Christ.

I've only seen the video in Spanish and on TV, works well in the original language. No confusion about the meaning of the noun or it's usage.

Desi

Mario .... now that you bring it up.. The word "Passion" fits Colombia like a glove. Note only the passion of the people to continue loving, laughing and living in spite of the hardships, but the religious connotations of the word. In my mind passion indicates an intense feeling whether it be of joy or pain.

Colombia is known as "El Pais del Sagrado Corazon" (the sacred heart of Jesus). See the publicity icon is a heart, sort of like the sacred heart of Jesus, with a crown of thorns around it , a cross at the top and a flame surrounding it.

And Kat, as to using the child's voice..........well I think that wanted to give it a soft and innocent image. It's very common in the states for children's voice to be used in commercials.

Interesting reviews G5 is right about "imaging" through the kid's voice, but like Desi said, it sounds okay in Spanish. Also Mario, that sequence of the orchid and the women wasn't lost on me, either.

I would have loved to have seen the races of Colombia better represented, epecially those lovely prietas!

I think that it accomplishes its purpose: promotion of tourism to Colombia, and puts Colombia in an opposite light to the typical 1990s stereotype of free "Colombian Neckties" BS that is still believed by many. It exposes the brighter side to a country that gets clobbered by the media. But why the light-skinned crowd? Its not an "anatomically-correct" documentary about Colombia, folks, its trying to appeal to its target group.....the gringo with the camera around his neck, black socks, Bermuda shorts, and Hawaiian shirts, with all the gold bling-bling! hahahahaha.....

Cockney Colombian says on May 27, 2006, 17:18:

Well the use of a child is fairly cynical but it's hardly unique to this video, indeed it's perfectly acceptable to use a child to narrate.

My problem is the rococo accent. The target audience of this video is not Colombians, it's American and European, specifically English speaking tourists who should be persuaded to come and give Colombia a chance. English is clearly not this childs second language (Given the stilted nature of its delivery I'd guess their reading phonetically off a cue card) and it just comes across as the Speedy Gonzales chewing an onion kinda pronounciation, hardly the best respresentation when we want to get away from the stereotype of Colombia as a nation of jungles and guerrillas. I've not listened to it in Spanish, I'm sure in the native tongue it's perfectly fine.

On the other hand it would have been odd if the narrator had a BBC accent.

Miguel_Clavo says on May 27, 2006, 20:57:

A Child is perceived as innocent and as the future...... theres no cynicism here....quite the opposite...the narrator seems to me to be Colombian or Hispanic by birth, but bilinqual very early on....as he still pronounces English with his spanish accent....if he spoke perfect English the audience would see him as the kid down the street that keeps stealing his newspaper....give him a slight spanish accent, and the audience sees him as a foreigner. Also, like "me gusta bailar" points out, innocent children are adorable...and innocent, and un-corrupted unless your are Freddy Kreugers kid!!! hahahhaa....I think it is an excellent and well-designed promotional piece. It should do well in the US...although it is still an uphill battle, but not too many Americans fleeing to Europe nowdays due to the exchange rates and high fuel costs of flying. The tourists need to go somewhere....

Just my opinion...

I think the kid's voice was too precocious, I would have happily put gaffer tape over the little blighters gob. If they want to attract more Americans they should use a sultry Colombiana's voice. Hey don't all gringos think Colombianas are sweet and innocent?

Gringodiego There is a first for everything. But keep in mind that Miguel Clavo and I are on the same page in the immigration thread. He was brilliant in his very candid assessment of things.

But Gringo, you shold know that I was in my office too when I heard it, I guess that is what it really means to be COLOMBIAN. I too teared....my eyes got so watery after I played it a second time, I had to reach for the tissue box in my desk that a only pull out when my allergies are bothering me. Americans who love Colombia and want to promote her with videos like this one are happy to see this kind of stuff, but it will not make them cry. So despite all my harsh words.....my love for her is endless.

Cockney Colombian says on May 28, 2006, 02:19:

I disagree that the narrator is naturally bilingual, the delivery is stilted, like he's reading from a cue card.

To clarify my cynical point, perhaps I used the wrong word. Or perhaps I myself am cynical. As quite rightly pointed out a child represents innocence, I don't think the producers of the video simply thought lets use a child because it'll be cute or because there's one here in the office, a child was chosen precisely because it can project the innocence. It's a calculated choice. Cynincal has a negative connotation to it, but my use of the word in this sense isn't neccesarily a criticism. As I've said from the start, the video is great, it's just the narrator who grates upon me. It probably sounds much better in Spanish

A couple of years ago El Tiempo gave a way a promotional video "Colombia Vida". The narrator is an adult male, which is perfectly fine. The closing montage however is a chorus of children of all backgrounds, which serves to represent that innocence and hope for the future.

Its a marketing tool to show positive things re: Colombia, NOT to portray Colombia as Utopia....every country has its "issues"...ie, the US has Morphus, Canada has Platano....etc...hahahaha..JK!

"I disagree that the narrator is naturally bilingual, the delivery is stilted, like he's reading from a cue card." CC

of course the kid is reading from cue cards..Heads of State use electronic cue cards but have more speaking and narrating experience than a child. I think the kid is bilingual.you can hear him speak English in the ad piece, and obviously has a spanish accent to him. i think that was intentional by the advertising people. in the link he is reading/speaking in English, and it would stand to reason that the same child narrated the spanish version, if their is one, although i have not viewed it. Maybe someone has, and can comment on it? But, IMHO, since children are like sponges (kinda of like my ex-wife, hahaha...but of a different sort...$$$$) i wouldnt doubt he has a certain command of English and Spanish...OR, even Spanglish like me! jajaja......

I'd have to say (after listening carefully the second time) that it sounds like a girl and that she has a very slight Spanish accent. She's reading from cards, yes, speaks Spanish as the first language (listen to her pronunciation of Spanish names like Botero, Barranquilla, García Marquez totally void of any English/American accent). It's all very cute but I would have preferred an adult voice.

Cheers,
