Colombia is not good enough to.....

make the world cup. Here are the following reasons:

-They are technically deficient. They simply seem not to have the talent to overcome other teams in the group, they are technically inferior in the midfield and on the attack, yet not so defensively. There is a reason they cannot score goals.

-Coaching. The manager is a joke. One might be able to refute the above point if there was any evidence that the coach is anything but tactically inept. The Steve McClaren of South America, so to speak.

-The other teams are simply better: Colombia will neither be able to suprass Argentina nor Paraguay in points based on the skill-level and performance of both teams to date. Realistically, Argentina's b-side would qualify ahead of Colombia. Even a Brasil side held back by the incompetence and drollness of Dunga won't fail to qualify, which means the remaining fourth qualification spot should either go to Chile or Uruguay, both of whom look much more likely to qualify than Colombia, especially Chile, having just recently embarrassed Colombia 4-0. The playoff spot at this rate will go to Ecuador, failing Chile or Uruguay.

Sorry Colombia, time to face reality... you SIMPLY AREN'T GOOD ENOUGH!

The sooner the Colombian football federation realizes this, the better. Believe me, it is worse to go on deluding oneself when it comes to the ability of the current squad. A complete overhaul is needed, the sooner, the better.

As an example: England. They were always a joke under Steve McClaren. They, on the other hand, seemed to have the talent to qualify for the euros but the coaching staff were such a bunch of blundering buffoons that they finished 3rd in their qualifying group behind Croatia and Russia. As a result of the English FA and fans having delusional faith in the team, they didn't qualify. When they realized how rubbish they were, they got rid of the manager, have a new (adept) coach and seem to be on the right path.

I do believe, in Colombia's case, it is as simple as bringing in someone who has the ability to bring out the best in the players, someone who is objective and wil make squad selections based on certain necessary criteria rather than on nostalgia or baseless hope.

While the current pool of Colombian players leaves a lot to be desired, their is no reason that they should be finishing anything less than fifth place in the group.

However, I leave you this to weep over: http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/preliminaries/southamerica/standings/inde...

I don't understand why they don't spend the money on a really good coach that will get them at the very least to the World Cup. At this point who care about how well they would do there, but at least get there and play the first round, lose and go back home. Geez.

That is an extremely good article.

""Our old style of possession football is criticised heavily here," he said. "People say you have to be more direct, get the ball forward quickly, you shouldn't pass the ball around so much - and because of this the joy and the talent have finished.""

This sums it up. Possession-oriented football is what dominates the international game, for the most part. Especially in the heat of South Africa, if you pay a more direct, attacking (English midtable premiership for example) style game you will be beaten by teams who are able to play the whole 90 minutes as yours tires after 60.

As the article reminds us, Colombia's golden-era of football used the possession football that teams like Argentina and Brazil and even Spain nowadays use to delight crowds worldwide, there is nothing wrong with it and is more conducive to players with lots of technical ability.

We need more Pibe's, Asprilla's or young Higuita's to get to the World Cup. So I'm definitely not holding my breath for that one.

So on a night like this when the football is on, where is the guy that says he has just been released from prison in Bogota and is saving up for his bus fare back to Medellin? Where is the guy that walks the streets perpetually looking for medicine for his baby? Where is the guy pretending to be Italian that says he has been mugged by Taxistas and wants $1500 to get to the embassy in Calle 93?

Odd that they should all disappear at the same time isn´t it?

Damn, I was about to watch this match which I thought was on in two hours! I guess I was incorrect.

I am not incorrect about Brazil, which relatively speaking is a joke. Dunga has taken a team that should be playing a los dioses to a team that draws 0-0 with the current Colombian squad.

The manager of Colombia and Dunga should get together and be expelled from football for life.

Is it possible that they just "assume" they will win a match just because they're known to be one of the best teams in America and don't perform that well? I'm just wondering because they made the Colombia team look like they played really well, which they did.

Mononoke28, you are absolutely correct. Brazillians are the most arrogant, bar not even the Germans, when it comes to football. They think that just based on the fact that they are Brazil, they will win everything they play. Often they are correct, but I am glad that Dunga is proving them wrong, and trust me, Dunga won't be around much longer.

I am glad Colombia didn't lose, but I am still afraid that I do not see them making the world cup, unless they change managers.
