Colombia in shock over grisly baby murder

BOGOTA, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- A grisly case of father kidnapping his own baby in Colombia has caused public shock and outrage after the body of the kidnapped boy, only 11 months old, was found on Monday.

The baby's disappearance was reported last week. On Sunday, the child's father was arrested for allegedly orchestrating the kidnapping of his own son.

The father later confessed that he paid 250 U.S. dollars to a woman to kidnap the baby from his home in Chia in northern Bogota, so he did not have to pay the child support maintenance.

The woman, now in prison, has admitted the kidnapping. The two will face a jail sentence of up to 16 to 30 years. However, many people and legislators are demanding life imprisonment for them.

The gruesome murder has sparked strong public anger and dismay nationwide. A national moment of silence is planned for Wednesday in the child's memory.

Meanwhile, people in Chia were staging a demonstration to condemn the killing.

President of Colombia's Congress Hernan Andrade said he was considering resuming deliberations on life penalty for crimes against children.

"It will be necessary to approve the referendum of meting out life penalty for this and other crimes committed against children," Andrade said. The country abolished life penalty in the early 1900s.

"The society must take drastic and overwhelming measures to protect children," Colombian Communication Minister Maria Guerraesas said.

"It is inconceivable that a father abandoned his son and then kidnapped him. We must be united to denounce such kind of crimes and punish the perpetrators," the minister added.

This type of news are broadcasted every day by the media and it happens all over the world.
For instance, the mon who kill her three or four kids, the other mom who kill her baby because her husband asked her to and how about the other folk who killed his or her sons becuase they heard a voice...and the list goes on and all these incidents did not happen in Colombia.
Here's a challange for you, can you post things that happen in Colombia but that do not make it to the MEDIA?

I wasn't aware that child support could be ordered for a father in Colombia. I wonder how much it was?

It can be ordered and in some extreme cases it can be up to half of the father's income. However, it is typically pretty low. Most fathers have to pay between $50,000 to $250,000 a month. Even so, many simply don't pay and it can be difficult for a mother to enforce. There are legal remedies, but as with much in the Colombian legal system, they are haphazard at best.

I believe in the military (and maybe the national police) that a child/spousal support order of 50% of salary is fairly common. I don't know if it's capped at x dollars per month. Some officers, I'd imagine Lt. Colonels and above, make a pretty nice income.

The latest news i heard was it was not from avoiding paying child support it was because he didn't want his GF to find out he has a baby.

from el tiempo

"Lo que creen los investigadores es que Pelayo no planeó la desaparición de su hijo para evitar una demanda por inasistencia alimentaria, como dijo. De hecho, Ivonne Lozano le aclaró a EL TIEMPO que nunca contempló la idea de demandarlo. Todo apunta a que Pelayo planeó el crimen para ocultarle a su actual compañera a su tercer hijo."

Where did you hear about those sentences? They sound unusually long for Colombia.

------------------------
They just arrested the guy yesterday so no, he hasn't been sentenced. But el Fiscal General said he wanted to propose the maximum sentence which is 60 years and with the new Ley del Menor, he won't be eligible to lower it at all.

Also, the guy did it to hide the baby from his new girlfriend and the baby's mother didn't even plan on suing him for child support.

Yeah, My wife and stepdaughter and their friends are pretty sad about it. What a sicko! But like someone said above, not only in Colombia. How many newborns are found in plastic bags in garbage cans in the US? More severe punishment in the US though. Usually, the law in Colombia is 1) say you're sorry and receive a 50% reduction in your sentence; 2) you can reduce the remainder by 1/3 more for good behavior.

So, many murderers who receive the standard 20 years for murder here are out in 7. 30 years equals out in 10. Justice?

I hate when I come across pictures or video like that. It is pretty depressing. When I saw the video of Nick Berg getting his head sawn off in Iraq, I was physically ill for a couple of days. (sorry for the hijack)

RJ-I remember that Photo and also a Beheading of that other Contract worker from the Florida East Coast in the same time frame.! I saw it on a link to a Far Out Mideast Terrorist Website! I also was sick for a few days after that Video!

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

As grim and outright sick as the videos are - I think they should be required viewing for US adults. At least that way everybody knows what we are dealing with.
