Cocaine Train by Stephen Smith I bought this book recently but havent started to read it yet.
Dont let the title put you off, after reading a review of the book I was informed that the book does not put Colombia in bad light.
The book is written by Stephen Smith. It is his story about his adventure, tracing the secret life of his grandfather Leslie Frost who was a pioneering raiway man in Colombia.
Although I havent read it yet it looks really interesting.

Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, especially 100 Years of Solitude, Love in the Time of Cholera (both fiction), News of a Kidnapping, and his autobiography (both non-fiction).

Killing Pablo, I can't remember the author's name but it's a great insight into early 90's Colombian violence.

Gaviotas: A village to Change the World. Again, don't remember the authors name but this book shows a totally different and progressive side of Colombia.

Walking Ghosts by Stephen Dudley. A great contemporary history of the conflict.

For movies, you can check out Mr and Mrs Smith. Their depiction of Bogota was quite accurate and is a great movie to show friends who are interested in visiting Colombia.

Gimme a break "For movies, you can check out Mr and Mrs Smith. Their depiction of Bogota was quite accurate and is a great movie to show friends who are interested in visiting Colombia." (william_andrew)

Granted it's been a couple of years I last saw Bogotá but the scenes supposingly happening in Bogotá could've depicted any seamy, poverty-ridden banana republic stereotype town rather than a Colombian city. The policemen didn't look or talk like like Colombians. The only remotely "Colombian" scene was the salsa dancing take.

They were showing Mr. and Mrs. Smith in the small-town movie theater nearby shere I was on my vacation and I just wanted to check out the "Bogotá" scenes out of curiosity. A disappointing movie, weak storyline and lousy acting.

My GGM fav is... Crónica de una muerte anunciada

100 years of solitude felt like Les Misérables meaning it takes him 50 pages just to introduce 1 character. I understand that both are masterpieces but 50 pages to introduce a character is a little long for my taste...

William_andrew,

Are you kidding? The mayor's office of Bogotá sent a letter to the producers of that movie chastising them for their compleltely ignorant and distorted depiction of Bogotá.

Irony alert I think Desi and ColX missed the irony in William_Andrew's post.

I thought "Perder es cuestion..." was crap, but it does at least show you what Bogota looks like, if you haven't already figured it out from watching Mr. and Mrs. S.

I know many Colombians think it portrayed Medellin badly, but I loved "Our Lady of Assasins"

Does anyone know the name of a Colombian film that was released last year about drug trafficking? I saw it previewed on tv when I was last in Colombia and remember seeing a scene in which a woman was trying to prepare herself for swallowing packets by swallowing grapes whole. I thought it looked interesting at the time but can't remember the name. Any ideas??

reply to burnito I presume you were speaking about Colonel Buendia. G.G.M. used 50 pgs to introduce the whole Buendia family not just one character. Marquez is truly one of the greatest novelists in the world. What makes him special is the fact that he wrote numerous classics. 100 years of solitude, love in the time of cholera, the autumn of the patriarch, the general in his labyrinth, and so many short stories.
I heard that love in the time of cholera was being made into a movie. Has anyone heard anything about that?

Chrisw1- That movie is Maria Full of Grace Is a very good movie, and Catalina was nominated for Best actress in the academy awards for this movie. Yes, mostly filmed in Ecuador but they made everything looked Colombian...aslo filmed in NY in Jackson Heights.

I also recommend : La Vendedora de Rosas - The flower seller...this was totally filmed in Medellin in the very bad & poor areas but it shows that side of Medellin... the actors are real street kids and the girl in the movie killed a taxi man( in real life) and is in prison for like 20 years! and most of the actors are dead.. but is a very good movie!

someone mentioned La virgen De Los Sicarios.. I liked that one too a lot.. especially the actingn and sarcasm on the older guy! LOVED IT AND LAUGHED A LOT even though this a sad movie as well in the sense that it shows the problems with the gangs in Medellin.

Rodrigo F is also a good classic medellin movie.

There was one called: Victorino, Victorino, Victorino.. this was more of a TV show but it was sooooooooo good that I heare they have it on DVD.. very Good .I watched it. It was about three guys that were born in Bogota with different social status.. they were all named Victorino and for some reason ( something to do with brujeria) they were told if they ever ran to each other they would die.

So they show thier lives,, one living in a poor barrio, another middle class and the rich one. Very Good. and there was another one I think it was called " amar y morir" ..

anyway.. books! yes Gabriel Garcia Marquez!!!!!!! read the one about his life..I am reading "El anuncio de un secuestro". very cool!

Also there is a wonderful book "LA REBELION DE LAS RATAS" ( the rebelion of the rats) ..the writer SOTO. THis is my fav. book! loved it! worth reading about Colombia situation on the 40's & 50's.

Antioqueñita,

I really can't see how any self-respecting 'antioqueño' could think that movies like "La Vendedora de Rosas" and "La Virgen de los Sicarios" are "good movies". They have got to be among the most negatively-biased, dismal, anti-Medellin garbage I've ever seen!!

ColX, but it does portray a real part of life in Medellín, so why are you against it. Is it because it doesn't gloss over reality and portrays a bad side. I think a balanced view showing both the good and bad is needed. I thought the movie was very well done and despite it being a depressing movie I found it well worth watching.

I am all for showing Colombia in a positive light and showing the many wonderful things, but to sweep things under a rug as if they didn't exist...

I realise you are Colombian and are tired of the stereotypes and I am not, but I think anyone with intelligence realises that these things do happen in Colombia. The film didn't glorify the lifestyle, it just portrayed it. Far better than make believe if you ask me.
