Colombia, Gardel and Tango
It is near the Anniversary of Gardel who dieds in Medellin on June 24, 1935. Uruguay, Argentina and France dispute his place of birth, but Colombia is alone in his last landing that was in Olaya Herrera Airport in a tragic accident.
Tango is not a foreigner in Colombia. That sensual dance that was conceived in the Buenos Aires’ suburbs (arrabales), found itself at home in places like the old Barrio Guayaquil in Medellín, a place that was the centre of the old Antioquia, the great market for farmers coming from towns by train on Sundays, the barrio of writers and poets like Leon de Greiff, Porfirio Barbajacob, Manuel Mejia Vallejo (this one with his beautiful book “Aire de Tango” which tail develops in Guayaquil)… So the Tango conquered the Colombian Andes with passion inspiring artists and giving its sensual steps to the city.
I do not know if still in Medellín the Tangovia in Buenos Aires and if in Medellín there is any program this month to commemorate the anniversary of Gardel. There were intentions to disappear the Olaya Herrera Airport. Many things in contra and in favor. But the main reason is its importance in the history of Tango. It would be great to rename it "Carlos Gardel Airport"… it will be just a great homage to one of the most important Latin American artist and poet of all times.

miamimike says on Jun 2, 2005, 23:55: Tango is enjoying a Rebirth here in Miami and there are many places offering Tango Lessons around here. There used to be nice Tango Bar in Calle Ocho(at 22 ave.) with a typical Argentinian Tango Band and free Tango Lessons but it closed a few years ago.Still other Argentine Restaurants/Bars located on Calle Ocho offering Tango Nights.Really a Classy Dance.
