Saw it on sale in the UK, Waterstones Canary Wharf, £14.99 (er... about 14.99 euros!)
Looks almost pocket size, 400 odd pages, hardback. Good to have an up to date guide but I think its changed a lot in breadth from the last 2000 edition. No mention of places like Monteria, El Banco... the kind of places that seemed interesting and were covered by the 2000 ed. And the hotel selection of say Medellin looks very conservative for budget options in Centro, especially as posters here have mentioned many good central options.
The Footprint guides were always the best for covering more than anywhere else, no matter if it wasn't a tourist hotspot and some off the beaten track town with no tourists. I guess that is why its nearly pocket size and the way there going... Does anything ever change for the better???
Anything???
Ha! Happy new year!
2009 plan to get out of the cold for good, leave the stinking smoke, maybe visit El Banco as well!

gorgonabob says on Dec 31, 2008, 12:08: the problem is that the 99% of the people who buy the guidebook do not go to places like El Banco or Monteria. and the books are made for the masses... ive still got a copy of the 96/7 lonely planet guidebook and the footprint 2001 which are the books to have to get off the beaten track.. youd need over six months in colombia to cover ever nook and cranny..or more really. a year probably. the lonely planet colombia, written by five authors this time and 80 pages bigger than the last effort, will be out around august..

Peter (Moderator) (Trustee board) (Dev team) (☼Travelguide writer) says on Jan 1, 2009, 03:53: I agree, the old guides went off the beaten track, I guess it's commercially not interesting. Which is why I want to have the online travelguide here, so we can add loads of places that perhaps didn't make it in the travelguides. I hope the LP guide will be much better than the previous edition... Poor but snappy 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
