Colombia Footprint Guidebook 2009 on sale

Saw it on sale in the UK, Waterstones Canary Wharf, £14.99 (er... about 14.99 euros!)

Looks almost pocket size, 400 odd pages, hardback. Good to have an up to date guide but I think its changed a lot in breadth from the last 2000 edition. No mention of places like Monteria, El Banco... the kind of places that seemed interesting and were covered by the 2000 ed. And the hotel selection of say Medellin looks very conservative for budget options in Centro, especially as posters here have mentioned many good central options.

The Footprint guides were always the best for covering more than anywhere else, no matter if it wasn't a tourist hotspot and some off the beaten track town with no tourists. I guess that is why its nearly pocket size and the way there going... Does anything ever change for the better???

Anything???

Ha! Happy new year!

2009 plan to get out of the cold for good, leave the stinking smoke, maybe visit El Banco as well!

the problem is that the 99% of the people who buy the guidebook do not go to places like El Banco or Monteria. and the books are made for the masses... ive still got a copy of the 96/7 lonely planet guidebook and the footprint 2001 which are the books to have to get off the beaten track.. youd need over six months in colombia to cover ever nook and cranny..or more really. a year probably. the lonely planet colombia, written by five authors this time and 80 pages bigger than the last effort, will be out around august..

id prefer it that smaller places stay out of the guidebook anyway.. for those who know and make the effort to get to those places there will be blessed few tourists

Hi gorgon, miamimike & Peter

Pleasure to say hello. Big fan of what you have achieved Peter with this website and going ahead and doing it.

The Brazil Footprint Guidebook was really special for covering off the beaten, interesting destinations in the Northeast. When you got to some place it described, like the Serra do Teixeira in Paraiba or the Chapada Araripe in Ceara, it was very, very unvisited and you got the idea from this guidebook. Now nearly all places are also on the net and araripe has two pousadas! But you need the name from somewhere to start.

And in the Northeast there are still a load of other places not covered by this or any guidebook so I was hoping they would not lose this aspect of the guides.

Anyhow Peter, when you coming to England next? One pound is one euro, the country is yours! London full of Italians it seems at the moment with euros and hugely oversize coats. I have soft spot for Neopolitans, though. Not that they need more shopping with their rubbish problem.

Arriverderci!
