Colombia beat Peru in World Cup qualifier

WEDNESDAY, 10 JUNE 2009 20:13 ADRIAAN ALSEMA

Colombia beat Peru in a World Cup qualifier crucial to avoid elimination. However, Colombia failed to impress.

The only goal of the game was made by Falcao Garcia who, following a corner, received the ball via Cristian Zapata.

Colombia, playing in Medellin's Atanasio Giradot stadium, were able to keep the initially defensive Peruvians at a distance until the last 20 minutes of the second half when the visiting team started attacking and serious cracks started showing in the Colombian defense, giving the Peruvians serious chances.

Despite a series of attacks and four minutes extra time, the visiting team was not able to score, allowing Colombia to celebrate the full three points.

Man I wish I was already in Medellin, I would've been at that game for sure! I don't even like soccer that much, but man, seeing all the Paisas uniting to hate on Peru, woulda been sweet.

Quick question....does El Estadio ever sell out? I've been to a Classico, and also a game vs America, but, the side stands are almost empty, is it just because their expensive (I didn't think so) or because people just want to be with the rowdy fans, like I did.

No matter where you go, the Korean tour bus isn't far behind.

I really should have seen that match at the stadium but had other things going on. I am pleased for Colombia but it sounds like the same old story when all Colombian strikers do not like to take the responsibility of taking a shot on goal for fear of missing. England and other countries have managers from other countries or continents; about time Colombia thought about the same.

Paraguay ended up losing 2-1 and Chile destroyed Bolivia 4-0. Unfortunately Mexico beat T&T 2-1. It looked like the altitude of Mexico City did the T&T boys in. Too bad I would have loved to see those xenophobic Mexicans lose.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Was anybody else taken aback by the over the top militarism on the big screen during the national anthem last night? As an American I obviously don't have much room to complain about another country's excessive nationalism or militarism. But it was nice to see my American tax dollars at work with the new Colombian Military fighter jets and helicopters. jejejeje.

squeezed out a win against the worst team in the region. Argentina did Colombia no favours in comprimising their own situation. Colombia receives Ecuador next, both teams will need the win.

Hi Drvannostren, Colombia does not hate Peru. Peru is Colombia's best ally in South America!
I do not know why paisas will contemplate hate against Peru, even in a soccer game?
