Colombia: 3 Israelis escape bus-torching

Bus carrying three Israelis set ablaze by guerillas on Medellin-Santa Marta road; passengers unharmed, their belongings stolen

Yael Levy Published: 09.02.08, 21:28 / Israel News

Colombian guerillas torched a bus that was making its way from Medellin to Santa Marta. Three Israelis who were aboard the bus escaped unharmed, but their belongings were stolen.

"My daughter contacted me by phone at around 2:30 pm," the mother of a 23-year-old Bat Hefer resident told Ynet, "she said all those aboard the bus fled the scene after it was pulled over and set on fire by guerillas.

The mother said the Israeli embassy in Bogota and the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem were looking into the bus passengers' situation.

"My daughter and a friend who was with her on the bus saved for this trip for a long time following their release from the army," she said, adding that she had not spoken to her daughter since the afternoon phone conversation.

The incident was not the first in which guerillas block roads in the area and pull vehicles over, but they usually do not look to harm passengers.

Johnny,

Let me try this as a social experiment. Drop me a line with your home address. I'll show up with a rocket launcher and start launching explosives at your house. Let's see how long you can put up with that before you want to take some action.

The Israelis genuinely want to live in peace. They just have some unpleasant neighbours.

Yeah but you can't help but wonder why there were only 3 people on the bus. I didn't think they made trips if they couldn't fill it to like 90% capacity.

truthseeker: It is not about religion, it is about how a bunch of kids act when they go travel after serving 3 years in the military.... traveling in groups and behaving like they owned the world...
If you want to know what I mean just go spend a week in Taganga during August or go to Cuzco where I even met a dope dealer that wouldn´t sell to them---and believe me they would have bought a lot.... So now try to understand how come he wouldn´t deal with them.
I have met some really nice ones, but they didn´t travel in groups. And they actually taught me a lot about these guys traveling in groups if you know what I mean.

rocinante, I don't think there were only 3 people on the bus, but yes it does read like that. I think it is just written from an israeli perspective.

"all those aboard the bus fled the scene after it was pulled over and set on fire by guerillas"

implies a few more people fleeing. if you check the website link and search for the Cali bombing it isn't there, it only focuses on the israelis. Not another jibe at israel from me, all countries' media do the same.

i would never wish anyone experiencing such violence like those 3 guys. it dosnt matter where they are from. on the other hand, i also have to agree with jonas. wanna experience some crazy-right-after-military-service young israelis? start with south east asia - anywhere from bangkok to hanoi and back, through cambodia, laos and india. they do act like they are someone special and when you ask them why they tell you you cant understand them as you are not jewish. the best isrealis ive ever met never traveled i groups and were not right after the military service. when i asked them why they dont hang out with the others they started to tell me stories after which i felt even more disgusted.

anyways, i didnt really get the story. why and who exactly pulled the bus over and set it on fire? and how do we know they were guerillas? did they try to attack the bus 'cause they knew there were some foreigners onboard? from the article one cant figure out what has actually happened in details.

...and cheers to all nice israelis who act normal and dont mind meeting new people from different countries and treat them like their friends!!!

over and out!

I was amused how that whatshisface a couple posts up apologized and then said that he was on the "wrong side of the Atlantic", as if people in europe would somehow think that it was OK to terrorize or murder Israeli packbackers because their government did something the poster didnt agree with. That is truly moronic thinking, LMAO. Only the most intellectually bankrupt would go along with that line of thought.

Then he goes on to say:

"Sorry thought forgot I was on the other side of the atlantic"

Europeans always forget that they ran the world for 800 plus years and completely brutalized the entire world. (Without taking a side on Israel and Palestine) Karma? Hey doode - you are from England - Karma - that country raped and pillaged the world in a manner far worst and for much longer than Israel.
