Not to hijack the Bogotá Danger thread, if I may, please let me go into further detail the incredible differences between these two Colombian regions.
For those new to this site here we go. Cat this will answer many of your questions.
CACHACOS
Cachacos are people from the mountainous and jungle area of Colombia. Such cities as Bogota, Cali, Medellin, Tolima, Bucaramanga, Pasto, Pereira, Villaviana, Manisales, Tunja, Popayan, Neiva, San Jose Guavare etc.
They are synonymous with words such as Burandanga, Gamines, Farc, LA VIOLENCIA, kidnapping, Pablo Escobar, murder etc.
Most have left Colombian and are living in Queens, Jersey City, etc.
They have strong Andean Indian features (short with red cheeks) some still wear ponchos and tend to be very suspicious of others.
COSTENOS
Are native to the hot sunny Caribbean coast of Colombia, such as Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Valledupar, la guajira Monteria
They are synonymous with words such as, cumbia, carnaval, Gabo, PARACO, dancing, happy, vallenato, Shakira. Carlos Vives, Diomenes, Sophia Vergara, Cerveza, and tend to shy away from work.
Nearly all costenos have chosen NOT to abandoned Colombia, thus the reason why you won’t meet any in the street of USA
Physically we tend to be much taller darker and more manly looking, thanks to our black and coastal guajiro injun roots.
Most costenas prefer to date other co stenos.
I hope this will clear many things

miamimike says on May 10, 2008, 05:47: Hey Elmo--Hi! Interesting post! I don't see any Costenos shopping in the toney Bal Harbor Barrio specifically in the Shoppes of Bal Harbor? Why is that? You know those Shoppes of Bal Harbor, they are just 5 minutes south of your Fishing spot at Haulover Park on Collins avenue as you head 5 minutes south of the Nude Clothing Optional beach we all know,,ji ji I mostly run into Miami based Costenos in the 2nd hand stores like Red, White & Blue or Goodwill and the Salvation Army Segundo Mano Tiendas in Hialeah at Flamengo Plaza just west of the Railroad Tracks. Great Place for bargain second hand clothes, TVs, Microwaves. Those Costenos(as) shop up a storm alongside the Haitian, Cuban Balseras and Central American Ladies. The Only Col Ladies I see in Bal harbor are the Ladies from Medellin&Bogota; they get their Rich American&Cuban Boyfriends to whip out the Tarjeta de Credito(de oro por supuesto) to pay for their Purchases. If they aren't Shopping in Bal harbor, they are in that other Fancy mall located in Adventura, 15 minutes west of Bal harbor. Whats up with this??? ¿Que paso? Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." GW Bush |

OneHappyBoy says on May 10, 2008, 05:49: So, predominant mestizo from Bogota? Mainly andean/spanish? My wife is 100% Colombian, but fair skin, short 5'2" predominant cheek bones, som italian blood... I can't really get from her if she has more European ancestry or indigenous? She says she doesn't really know. how predominant is European ancestry in Bogota v. indigenous? YES a very general question, but one founded in trying to learn more about the people in the area Words are just words. nothing more or less, but eloquently expressed, like a symphony to Beethoven's ear, no army can defeat and no oppression can exist. |

Robert Jorge says on May 10, 2008, 23:34: Catgirl - a Heinekin or Corona in Colombia are Heinekins and Coronas. They are the only widely available cervezas that I know of in Colombia that are imports. Most nightclubs will have them, 22 oz (mas o menos) bottles for 15 mil pesos. The premium domestic in Colombia is probably Club Colombia. It is the same brewery / company as Aguila etc., but costs a little more and is probably comparible to a Michelob in the States.
