Colombia: Cartagena or Santa Marta?

I am traveling to Bogota Colombia in Dec for two weeks to meet and old friend who lives there. We are going to travel either to Cartagena or Santa Marta, as I know nothing of either I would like some input. Which is a better place to have fun, party, meet people, and see cool things?

Tu Candela Has two floors. The upstairs is the original and most crowded. About 2 years ago they bought the bar downstairs and added another floor. The downstairs is less crowded.

cartagena I have spent a good amount of time in both Santa Marta and Cartagena. Santa Marta by far has the prettier/better beaches and can be very calm and relaxing. But Cartagena is a bigger city, a better party atmosphere, and tons to do. You can't go wrong either way, but Cartagena sounds like a better fit. If you have time... do both. Catch a Brasilia and head over to StaMta and relax if you can.

Hunter, I keep my black ass upstairs, I love dancing en elbowing modefoque in the rib, or accidentally rubbing my sweaty self on the girl dancing next to me, like a total perv

I'll get there, when I get there!

In “tu candela” for gringos picking up chicas is as easy as picking off them Mexicans coming across el Rio Grande. Listen my wife threw a piece of lemon on my head because I had a number of chicas checking me out, and I ain't no gringo! I’m just an old Colombian modefoque with a fist full of dollars. Remember that movie “the good, the bad and the ugly”, well, I’m the ugly one

I'll get there, when I get there!

Texasguy, I highly recommend Cartagena and specially “tu candela”. Most colombianas think that club is filled with hookers, I don’t think so! is place filled (wall to wall) with girls that just wanna have fun.

I'll get there, when I get there!

Chicas? No se. I've never been to Santa Marta. But if this fat, old Gringo can score in Cartagena.....(I do have hair though).

Don't ask about chicas more than 5 years younger than you are. You'll piss off some people here.

Santa Marta Is more like bring a girl with you type of place, maybe at Chritmas it might be differant, because of the extra Colombian tourists there.

Cartagena Tu Candela Bar is a fun place on Friday and Saturday nights if you are downstairs, but during weeknights, or even on a Sunday, it is packed with skanky chicas prepago...didn't like it so much then....

Anyway, for a totally different but extremely cool experience, you might want to try Café del Mar, which is also inside La Ciudad Amurallada.....it is beautiful, the music is so cool, and very laid back and relaxed.

I was in Cartagena last week, and I LOVED it; lots to see and do.

I haven't been to Sta Marta in a while, but I also love it. For me it doesn't matter, as long as there is an ocean nearby, I am a happy girl!!!

Cafe Del Mar I echo the sentiments on Cafe Del Mar. Very romantic setting with the right person, great chill-out vibe music. Try not to fall in love...

traveling THanks for the input. My friend in Bogota is wanting to drive from Bogota to Cartagena around the 27th of december stay for 7 days and drive back. Is this a safe way to travel?

Mr. Hollywood says on Oct 4, 2005, 07:15:

Driving? Have you seen how Colombians drive? Driving to the corner store isn't safe. But the road trip between Bog and Cart is generally free of guerilla action these days, at least according to the cops. It's very long.

Is Cafe del Mar the one up on the city wall? That place has a great setting for sure.

Cafe Del Mar That's the place. Look one way and you've got the ocean, another view you have the skyline of bocagrande and laguito, and behind you a great view of the old city. Sit at the wall, or on some of the comfy couches sitting around. Great music played, kind of a world -beat vibe. A great place to take your date if you're feeling it...

i would spent the entire day in santa marta, enjoying the beach, fishing, etc. and about 7 pm drive 2-3 hours to cartagen to get drunk all night at "tu candela'

I'll get there, when I get there!

i'm with you elmo.. the cafe del mar is okay if you have a kink in your neck from permantly have in your nose up in the air.
and like cheap perfume.
and overpaying for nothing.
the best thing about that place is that its above the festicine office, where you might just find a little culture.

Saltador says on Oct 4, 2005, 12:53:

OG must be clairvoyant... ...I never knew why I had the kink in my neck, but now it all makes sense. My neck is sore from having my nose in the air savoring the cheap perfume, which I love. The only thing that would be better is if they would have a cover charge to keep the riff-raff out. Although it sounds like the riff-raff doesn't like the place anyway.
What is this culture thing you speak of? Is it something you know of, or have just heard of?

Mr. Hollywood says on Oct 4, 2005, 13:56:

Here I thought that kink in my neck was from trying to lick my balls all day.

Mr. H If I could lick my own balls, I probably wouldn't have discovered Colombia. No need to learn now.

elmodefoque says on Oct 7, 2005, 05:18:

If I could lick my own balls, I would never leave the house.
Licking my own balls has always been top on my wish list. I remember back in La Guajira sitting under the refreshing shade of a mata raton tree, looking across the way thru the blinding bright sun and observing dogs laying under a big tree on the other side happily licking their balls. I stared at them for hours, and just think, damn! those lucky filthy modefoques how great is that, to able to lick your balls anytime you want, as long as you want. If god gave me a choice, a million dollars or the ability to lick my own balls, I would truly consider licking my own balls, but if he could make my thing so damn long that I don’t even have to bend over, then the hell with the million bucks.

I'll get there, when I get there!
