I don't recommend cockfights (or dogfights). In my college years, I had a roomate who in a past life, illegally raised and trained these "cocks" (it was horrible how they were kept. Legs were tied to a rope to ensure they stay seperate etc... And those horrible metal blades they put on their legs/feet.) The people he worked for had "fake" part time jobs to rationalize the income they pulled from this. They even burried the money.
It all came to a screeching halt when a friggin head hunter knocked on my door looking for my roommate, as the people he worked for jumped ship during a raid. All these folks were shady and bad news. I would think twice before supporting their lives.

They're all over the place. My wife and I went to one in the mountains outside of Armenia, walked there through the forest with only the moon lighting us. Afterwards the store (only thing at the crossroads) became a mini-disco. Danced all night with the local campesinos. While on a breather outside (mini-Tejo court too) I saw lights racing toward us and thought "now this can't be good". It was the army and shut the place down, I forget why, but it was a real minor reason. We then had to find our way back to the farm.

They'd do it every month, but the store is shut up for good. Odd story (sorry about the tangent). The owner came back one night late and found his wife with a young Willyz driver. About 2 weeks later the driver was shot dead. It is believed that someone else shot the kid, but either way the family just wants a head. They threatened the store owner and he left town.

So now I have no place to dance. But there's still plenty of cockfight places.

They are common especially in the more remote pueblos. The only one I saw was in Puerto Inirida in the Guania although many taxi drivers have informed me about others happening in other towns. The one I went to was full of police and military so I don't imagine it was illegal but perhaps regulated in some way.

There's pros and cons to the old argument of why anyone would want to see one. I value the experience but wouldn't necessarily go again.

I love animals....I even cringe when I see an ol sway back mule or horse over in La Mayorista pulling around about 20K pounds of rice or tile or whatever ! The cats who spray around my house are my neighbor's cats and strays. Personally, I have a Pedigree cat (so I know what I am gettng) - indoors only and very clean. I am anti "do you own a cat?smell"
I don't know why people let their cats roam. That's irresponsible and contributes to those stinky ferral cats you see and they get hit by cars. So why even have a cat if you are going to let em roam about? Anyhoo...
