Cockfighting

My father-in-law is very keen on the 'sport'. I know next to nothing about it- it's been illegal here since Queen Victoria was a lass. It strikes me as being both boring and unpleasant.

Can anyone here attest to its popularity in Colombia? Have you been? Is there a lot of money involved? Do all social classes participate?

I grew up in Antioquia and never saw or heard of a cockfight. I always heard about it happening in la costa (as Elmo would say, north of MonterĂa).

I've been googling and am surprised to learn that it's still legal in parts of France and the US.

There's a lot of animal cruelty in Colombia. At least what we see as cruelty to animals. Colombians don't place lots of value on animal life, having enough human life issues to worry about, I suppose.

Cockfights, feria horse parades where the hungry, thirsty, beaten animal is just abandoned somewhere after the drunk rider has sauntered off somewhere to continue partying, neighbours feeding broken and ground glass to unwanted dogs, monkeys held on a leash that chafes around the tiny waist are just some examples.

There is here too, I have heard some disturbing stuff too on the news, I wish they would prepare you and give you the option of switching off before you hear that kind of thing, that's why I have stopped watching the spanish chanel TVE cos the other day I saw a girl being stoned to death by a bunch of middle aged men as she comitted the "sin" of falling in love with a guy from a different religious group, it was horrific they were all standing around recording it on their mobiles.....and I wasn't able to sleep that night, I couldn't get it out of my mind..

Oh well sorry I think I went off the subject there...

People are so cruel to animals and others, it's sad .......**sigh**

Cockfighting is also popular in the Meta (interior of Colombia). I never saw a cockfight, but I saw lots of the roosters used for the fights in people's yards or patios.

Desidera - I am not being funny but I wouldn't stop either!!!!!

Only if the dog was dead of course - if it was alive I would panic and ask for help, but there would be tears even though I am much of a fan of animals, as in having pets etc but I HATE the idea of any living thing suffering or causing it to suffer on purpose?

Over here there are also people who treat animals as they would their own offspring! They even let them sleep in their bed and stuff...eew! No offence to anyone who does that!

I'm wondering if many Colombians are opposed to the 'sport'?

My cockfighting enthusiast father-in-law is a man of intense decency and kindness. But he's been around so much violence and horror in his life, I think the idea of 'rights' for animals (especially birds) would just puzzle him.

I've just been discussing cockfighting over dinner with my wife. She says the mafia guys bet heavily on it- so that answers that question. Interestingly, she has no concept that the 'sport' may be immoral or cruel. She just shrugged and said: 'If you're so interested, I'll take you next time we're there.'

you both are correct, about the Napoleanonic code.
La? It's catching up. Everyone....everywhere, lives 'by code', now. Even the Banana Republic.

But, you could/would likely appreciate the way things were here 20 years ago, .... alot (more than any other state) like 'the rest of the Caribbean states'. Less government interference. Like Colombia. And, A WHOLE LOT OF REVELRY.... SIEMPRE.... Like Colombia.

I remember a friend who went to Minnesota and after being told he couldn't carry his shotgun in the inside back of the truck, across the window, in a holder, and that he couldn't fish in the river with one of those big nets.... he told em he was going back home cause they got too many f*qn laws up there!

Actually, Kalder.... no other place, probably, other than maybe Puerto Rico (from what I have heard) resembles the culture of Colombia, like that of Southern Louisiana... Cajun Country, if I may. (No, I am not one, ..... solo...honery...honorary? probably not.... you know how I am) But, it is heavily Catholic, work hard, party harder,....very similar indigenous sorts of music, alot based on or around the sound of the accordion. One speaks (spoke) french; the other spanish.....many times otherwise, you wouldn't know the difference.

The only animal sport I have seen was bull fighting and I didn't particularly want to but it was a bank holiday and the whole village was there so we went there. It wasn't as bad as I expected, there was no flashy costumes and poking the bulls with sticks and hurting them, just flag waving and dodging, and with many cheers of support when the bull actually knocked somebody down!

In Villavicencio, they actually ride up next to the bulls on a horse, and then while the horse is running next to the bull, the llanero grabs the bull's tail and actually trips up the bull by pulling the tail. Besides the bull tumbling, he doesn't get hurt. No spears or swords. I can't remember the name of the activity, but I loved watching it. And talk about skilled horsemanship.
