What's next? Surely not commercial success. I've purchased them twice. Once they were "plain" and the next time they had chocolate spread between them (like an Oreo), presumably to mask the flavor. Both styles were the foulest-tasting cookies I've ever had. If you're familiar with mate de coca, think of those "tea leaves" that smell like moldy alfalfa hay mixed in with cookie dough - that would be a close approximation. Yuck!

Does it make you feel good like hash brownies?

I recently brought back a box of Aromaticas de Coca (look at the photo above, partial box, brown and green, and the letters COCA NASA -- I bought the exact same thing). I was sure I'd be stopped at US customs, get thrown in jail, gain international notoriety; I'd be as famous as Carlos the Jackal and play a central role in crime novels. So much for the daydream...people are openly selling it (at very high prices) on Amazon.com

Tinto (Moderator) says on Nov 8, 2007, 16:43:

I have no idea. According to the 1961 or 1964 UN treaty, international trade in coca derivatives is supposed to be illegal, but there are exceptions for the Coca-Cola company and for things like codeine.

On a somewhat related note, I found a humorous "suggested product" after clicking on the Amazon.com link - a six pack of Coca-Cola Classic in cans for almost $5 plus freight (it weighs almost five pounds). Who in the hell buys this stuff from Amazon.com? Where in the world is Coca-Cola unavailable? And, of course, there is a product description and four product reviews written by visitors from Mars/people with nothing better to do. Haha.

Coca and cocaine are very different substances for your body to take. It's comparable to say, grapes and wine, one is derived from the other, but you wouldn't have any qualms about giving your child a bunch of grapes, would you? Whereas a bottle of wine would most likely be a different matter.

In the plazas they sell coca leaves. I've made tea and panela with it many times. It results in an energizing drink and is good for soroche (altitude sickness) -- I've taken it hiking with me many times in the nevados. Certainly no buzz or anything like that, more like lucozade. If you care to research the process involved in making cocaine you'll see that they use, among other chemicals, sulphuric acid and gasoline, so I don't advise anyone to take it.

When I was in Colombia I bought coca leaves and coca tea.

I was thinking of bringing them up in my suitcase but at El Dorado I decided against it. I think I have a "mulish" aura, because at customs, they always pull me aside and go through my luggage and ask me stupid questions.

Everytime I am at an American airport, I get some Queen Latifah look alike in a Homeland Security uniform yelling in my face and "axing" me questions.

Even in Dominican republic, they pulled me aside as I was boarding the plane and did a body check on me. All the other gringo and dominican passengers just walked on by while I was getting the third degree right at the boarding gate.

I kind of like coco tea.

Bummer. I never get searched by customs. They must figure I look too dumb to be a mule.

In Canada I am always honest with the custom guys. "I'm bringing back twelve litres of liquor from Argentina. I'm over my legal spending allowances and here are the receipts that show that." They thank me for my honesty and waive the duties.

The best was when the guy rummaging through my suitcase dug right into my bag of "Always", took one out and slashed it diagonally. When he saw that no white powder came pouring out of it, he tried to put it back in the bag. I was like. "Mmmm, throw it out bro, I'm NOT talking that thing with me".

It's hard to hold on to your dignity at moments like that..... but I try. I guess I am just full of grace.
