CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles in the US?

Every time I visit Barranquilla I am fascinated that most vehicles run on both petrol and CNG. Even when the streets are choked, there doesn't seem to be any smell of exhaust in the air. Not only is it clean burning, but you (more or less) triple your driving dollar.

One would suppose that if you could fill-up your car at your home Big Oil wouldn't take a liking to the practice. This is my beleif to why this has not taken off in the States.

Has anyone heard of a CNG conversion kit for cars here in the US? It just makes too much sense.

Thoughts and/or ideas on this, and why it would or would not work?

superiorsurf Are you sure its most vehicles, I thought it was a small minority of taxis and busses, plus an even smaller amount of private vehicles?????

Every vehicle I've rented, be it an SUV or a Twingo, has been equipped with a petrol/CNG system. So I guess I shouldn't save "every", but there are sure a lot of them.

i wish the 3 axle work trucks and buses in medellin did the same. it is a smogfest by the end of the day in MDE bonita. my #1 and only real complaint about MDE. maybe i should check out barranqilla?

i would think the technology would be most pronounced in bogota. maybe not? i have never seen a CNG in MDE.

trying to walk a straight line on sour mash and cheap wine...

Why would Big Oil care? The same companies that control the petrol control the gas.

And how do you "fill up at home"? It's not like those cars are filled up off the pipe into the back of your gas stove.

There are a lot of CNG vehicles in the US, but they tend to be big ones like muni buses and such.
