Clubbing in Bogogta

I have been clubbing in Bogota quite a lot, the nightlife is great and most people are very friendly. However, after a couple of years I have noticed I havent seen any RnB clubs or clubs playing 80's music. Sometimes Im in the mood for that kind of stuff but seems like finding these kind of clubs is a little bit complicated all I find is Reggaeton and Musica pa planchar in Parque de la 93 or Chía. Ive tried the EsKape guide but couldnt find anything.
If you know of a nice place to go clubbing let me know ;)

GiB Thanks a lot, gotta give those places a try. There was an 80's place in Zona Rosa a couple of years ago, cant remember the name but i was underage back then so I couldnt really make it. 116 on Av 19...Is that somewhere close to the Oma? and would you mind rating it?

Hey cerealkiller I know what you mean with the reggaeton... it gets old really fast!

The 80s place on 19th Av was real good last time I was there (late 2003), it's just north of 116, so yes, I guess that's close to Oma.

I want to make some reccomendations but I guess I'd like to know what you're into, and what type of crowd do you feel comfortable with. I know Villalobos (the Colombian Dick Clark) has a new place on calle 80 and something like Kra 2. Haven't been there but his previous place was good for a while (it was called Ia) so this one -I forget the name- should be happening too.

Usaquen should have some good spots too. Not sure about la 93 anymore, the places are good but the park has become a tourist attraction for foreigners and colombians alike. There should be some good 'ol colombian partying at the Salto del Angel if you're into that, but other than that who knows. Is Punto G still around? How about Sayaca on Cra 11 and Calle 80? Are you into techno?

rock and metal in Colombia I have a list of over 50 rock and metal groups in Colombia, most of them post/email their live performances in clubs etc. I think these clubs would be interesting to get away from salsa and vallenato for a bit. Several of them play very good music, matching anything you are used to listening in the Western world. I can imagine these clubs and bars play rock on other days as well.

If there is interest I can post performance dates and locations here.

Thanks guys! Just drove by la 19 and saw the Full 80's bar. Kinda tiny...
Santibog, Ive been to El Salto, Andres, used to go a lot to G-spot (dont think its there anymore, El sitio, Guarana, Sayaca etc etc...I love the environment and all that. But sometimes you want to change the setting, I remember the name of that club like 5 years ago or so..it was called Le Freak and i heard it was good back when it first began, then it became quite Blah , As for techno, I love it, I love teathron and I am definitely going to Fatboy Slim's gig (Thinking about Paul Van Dyk as well)...Ive noticed there are a lot of new things in Zona Rosa, i used to think it was slowly dying.
Lionheart, do post events!!! Id love to see some local rock bands, I have never seen one -i should be ashamed-
GiN I am gonna give Full 80's and My Place a shot. Thanks for the posts, you guys rock :P
BTW, went to TIGF's this afternoon and the menu is totally diff from the one in London, no vegetarian option, I hadnt realized that!!! Had a good time though, watched a football game :P

Full 80's OK, I only walked past that Full 80's bar on 19 one night... I didn't go in, but the funny thing was, it was ANOTHER bar nearby that was playing "Tainted Love" as I walked past. The 80's bar didn't really attract me - it looked small and crowded and not all that interesting. Just from the outside, GIB's 6 rating looks about right. Although, I must admit I've had the most fun at little hole-in-the-wall joints like that, rather than the bigger clubs like Salto del Angel... so you might love it, who knows.

As far as the vegetarian option, sadly, the only place I know of that offers a veggie burger is the Hard Rock Cafe, at the Atlantis mall, and it's not really all that good. There are a few little vegetarian restaurants - I went to one, I think it was on 11 around 90 or so, and it was pretty lousy. The best vegetarian options I've found are at the Crepes & Waffles chain, and also, there's a chain of fast-food pasta restaurants (at least at Unicentro and Atlantis, probably other malls too) called Spoleto, where there's lots of options and the food is actually pretty good. Aside from that, good luck!

Come to think of it... On my late-night walks, I've noticed a number of bars in that strip on 116 between 15 and 19, and along 19, that seem to play 80s music. You might just want to take a walk in that area.

Yay! Now my list is getting longer, wow i really didnt know there were so many diff places, I mean im almost a local yet there are a lot of places I have never heard of. I travel to La Candelaria almost everyday and the only place ive been to is both the Platypus and Hotel de la Opera. I know there is a lot more to it, so if you guys have other places to recommend not necessarily in the North (Id like to explore something different as well) bring them on. Anything except reggaeton and vallento goes (cant dance either). :P

When I was there... I was in Bogota just this last October visiting a friend of mine and one night, we traveled just outside of the city with a bunch of people and went to a pretty good place called "Carne de res". I don't remember exactly where it is, but it's somewhere outside of the main part of the city in a small strip. They played all sorts of music (90's, 80's, 70's, etc...) It was a cool place but crowded.

Ventura The place that Goose mentioned above on Calle 90, abajo de la 15 is called Ventura soup and salad. I haven't been there in ages but I remember it being good.

A little more intimate... As long as you're in La Candelaria, you need to stop in and see a restaurant called El Gato Gris. It's not far from the Platypus. It's quiet and romantic and totally fascinating, and hands-down my favorite place in Bogota so far. If you meet someone special, it's where you want to take them.

A Colombian friend took me to a little hole-in-the-wall club last weekend... I can't recall the name, but I'll find out. It was on Septima down around 40 or so, just past the park. Quite small, but beautifully painted inside and it had the best music I've heard in Bogota, a real eclectic mix of 80s dance and modern stuff. Very cool little place with a fun vibe. There's other fun spots like this, but it definitely helps to have a native guide!

cshires says on Jan 23, 2005, 17:50:

I agree... El gato gris is indeed a very nice place. Especially with the fireplace and the dark cozy atmosphere in there. Definetly one of my favorite places also.

Ventura? Wow, I don't think that was the place I went to... I'll have to go back and look again! Darn my lousy memory. Hopefully, it's not the same place, as I'd love to have a good veggie restaurant to recommend. There's another one down 116 that's a little health food joint and appeared to be vegetarian-friendly, but they seemed baffled that I didn't want their chicken dish of the day. The Arab restaurant on 116 next to the Carulla on the corner of 15 offers a vegetarian plate, but again, it's nothing to write home about (is there decent falafel anywhere in this city?). I hate to recommend chain restaurants, but unless you're going high-end, Spoleto and Crepes have been the best for me so far.

Cerealkiller says on Jan 23, 2005, 18:51:

SO where is this gato gris place? I believe Ive read it a couple of times already but at first i thought it was a mistake given there is a Gato Negro...Which is alright...for my parents. As for Vegetarian food, the only decent place ive found so far is WOK and thats because most places -including high ends- believe vegetarian = Hardcore lettuce junkie.
Goose Id like to know where this 7ma con 40 bar is. Sounds very interesting ;)

Sorry, not sure Sorry, but I don't know the exact location. (I never quite learned all the street numbers and names yet since I don't live there)
All I remember is that it is up on the hills near the older part of the city and it was back up in an alley. It's not very big, so it can be easy to miss. Maybe someone else can provide the exact address or directions. I have some pictures I can post of what it looks like inside.

goosekirk says on Jan 23, 2005, 20:09:

Cereal I'll get the name and exact location of the bar on Septima for ya. I forgot about Wok, which isn't bad for vegetarian food and not too pricey (although, and I guess this sounds picky, but sometimes I think their dishes are a little too sweet). Agreed about Gato Negro, too.

I can't remember the street numbers for El Gato Gris, either, but I'll be going to the Candelaria sometime this week to take pictures, and I'd be happy to show you. It's in an alley off the plaza... whose name I can't remember either... but it's the plaza just a few blocks south of the Platypus, with a big wall with costumed mannequins on it and a fountain in the middle... see, this is why I shouldn't give directions. It's not too hard to find, but if you want a little tour just send me a private message and we'll sort it out.

Havent you heard that crazy story about Jack the Ripper being a girl? :P You should try some Fruit and Fibre with cranberry juice aboard...It definitely makes me want to kill it!!! -Kumis really doesnt do the job nearly as pleasant ;)-

Kumis... Or, in English, "cheese milkshake." Dang, that's some hardcore lactose. That's like the flaming shot of 151 of dairy products. I can understand with corn flakes - that's like a mixer - but do you drink it straight-up, too? If so, well, I'm not one to judge, but just keep in mind that the first step is to admit that you have a problem... I'd hate to see you end up out in a pasture somewhere, passed out under a cow...

clubs and concerts in Colombia I signed up with some tour agencies in Colombia to receive concert info for my radio station. So you will be getting first hand info when something gets rockin' somewhere. I noticed for 2004 that most concerts were open-air concerts. Of course, the 2005 concert page is under construction. I will be pulling club names I found and post them here. I was surprised about one fact, it seems Manizales is Colombia's heavy metal center. I also found out that almost all current major European metal bands have performed in Colombia and/or did extensive tours there. But just a few US metal bands played in Colombia, go figure.

Just a currious question Are there any specific clubs in Bogota where Americans go to hang out at? It might be cool to go to a place and meet up with some fellow citizens, etc.

My baby - my hobby Yes, I own, manage, and work on an internet radio station. It is non-profit, one year old now, running 24/7, and was started as a proof of concept. I am ex-musician and ex-club DJ from the 70s in Germany, and started doing this when I was helping out as DJ on a different station, and noticed how much I missed messing with music.

The idea behind the station was to offer music in general and international music specifically, that doesn't receive much or no airtime in the USA. I loved one station in Austin TX a few years back, that did the same. I was also hoping the syndicates would sue my ass off for publically broadcasting downloaded mp3's, but they haven't yet, and no black suburbans are pulling up either. My case would be in a total grey zone legally.

We offer banner swapping with underground and independent label bands from international groups. Currently we are gathering banners from Latin American bands, next are European and Asian bands. We are slowly moving into a poaition to actually receive donations from non-US independent labels who can't get US coverage. Currently my DJs and I are donating personal resources to keep the station running.

I am specifically looking for a Colombian DJ now with broadband internet connection for a few hours per week. I have one DJ in Sao Paolo Brazil and one in Trinidad, as an example. When I am DJ I play a lot of Latin metal/rock, also from Colombia, Syndel in Brazil plays a lot of metal from Brazil and Argentina.

Within a year I hope to be able to go offshore and be like good old pirate radio. Here is my link to station:

HearThePulse Radio

(the schedule isn't accurate now, I am editing it)

Lionheart thats brilliant. I did some radio stuff back in high school and last year while at Uni, and I think youre absolutely right, international music really doesnt have much publicity which is a shame, there are some really good things out there. Anyways Im checking it out, playing Paint it Black :P.
I like the sound of it, congrats.
Have a nice one :D
