Darloup I do have to agree with you, nothing beats the northern european beers, Spains and Italys beers suck, France does have some good beers. The northern European countries have perfected the art of brewing, I dont hate Colombian beers, I just dont take them seriously, to me they are like drinking a nice cold bottle of soda pop.

So right! It's a refreshing beverage when it's hot, but PLEASE let's not pretend it's beer... Furthermore, it not even Colombian in origin, so what's the big deal?

P.S.: Have you ever drunk the Carlsberg "Special Brew" or even the top-of-the range Tuborg? Now, those are beers. And the best "every day" beer I ever tasted was from Bavaria. Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Philipines and China have some good beers too. I'd put Mexico on the list, but they tend to add tequila in their beer (very tasty, but it's no longer a beer).

Now, those are "lager" tastes. Just visit the UK for a "real ale" taste. You'll taste the barley, the hops and you'll be chewing the ale. And I'm not even mentioning the stouts.... Or the "white" beers, or the Belgian's "Gueuse"...

Better to have tried and failed than having regrets all your life about what you MIGHT have missed

johnny, when you're saying all these beers are South African, you're really trying to just say they're owned by a South African conglomerate (SAB) right? I mean all of these beers were started in their "home" countries, it's just that SAB swallowed up their management as far as I know. That's somewhat different from being "from" South Africa in my book. That said, I feel brews (no pun intended) from South Africa aren't half terrible. Hansa Pilsner? Castle Milk Stout?

Alright, so Club Colombia is not winning any gold ribbons at internationl beer tasting competitions. But that being said, I find it easily drinkable if not overpriced (supermarkets and tiendas) and I bet one would not have to look very hard to find a German in the cervezeria in charge of the brewing, as there are in Mexico and Costa Rica. And then in Mexico u have the Bohemia and the Negro Modelo which are both excellent. And hows about all the incredible micro brews in the U.S. popping up all over theplace. There are some outstanding small scale brews, pilsners, pale ales, lagers, etc. And both Sam Adams Boston Lager and Anchor Steam/Porter from San Francisco have won gold ribbons up against the best in Europe. Now Panamanian beer could really use some help. Its amazing what passes for beer here..........I wish Club Colombia could be found at Super 99..........

markobhoy says on May 10, 2009, 03:48:

a few points, i agree with august-just because a south african conglomerate has taken over the management doesn't make beers such as club colombia or pilsner urquell, are south african. i think the brewers in plzen would have a fit if you suggested their beer wasn't authentically czech.

and as a side point, SABMiller is now based in london. does the fact that they changed their headquaters, now mean that all of their beers changed from being south african to english overnight? of course not.

i mainly drink pilsners/lagers, so i can only say that in my experience the best i've had were in germany and czech republic. i know that is a real cliche, and i wish i could come up with some obscure place :) but in all honesty it has been in these two places. i spend quite a bit of time in scandanavia, but i haven't been that impressed with their lagers...though maybe it is the fact that i'm paying the equivalent 20,000 pesos colombianos for each glass!

onto club colombia, one of the good things about this beer is the amount of malt is seems to use. it differentiates it from many of the bland and virtually identical beers in south america-aguila, pilsen, polar, brahma, antarctica, quilmes, palermo.

however, in defence of these beers-on exceptionally hot days, an ice cold bottle can go down well.

also, if one were to be planning on drinking 10 bottles of a particular beer, i think club colombia's malt could become quite sickly...but this is hypothetical of course.

Once again Darluop you have managed to show what a pompous hyper critical person you are. For Gods sake is it possible for you to enjoy a simple pleasure of life without over analyzing everything and judging others in the process? If someone enjoys beer from the bottle so be it. One of my fondest memories is the day I shared my first beer with my Grandfather, an ice cold Hamm's straight from the can, sitting on the back porch of his little farm house, after a hard day working in the fields. Since then I have learned to appreciate beers from all over the world, and I know the benefits of drinking from a glass, but nothing will ever top that "cheap" beer I shared with my Grand Dad when I was 18. FYI, I like Club Colombia.

For every place a different taste, culture, tradition. And such varied conditions - sweeping statements about regions and their beers just seem absurd. One of the pleasures of world travel is enjoying and learning about the local cuisines - including beer, wine, spirits. For me at least, when in Rome.....
In Colombia I enjoy Club Colombia, sometimes Aguila (which they serve in our local Colombian bars). In Brazil, Brahma and other local brews. In English pubs, the many interesting ales. In Holland, Grolsch. They say the Heineken exported is very different from what they serve locally. In Spain on the Camino, Spanish beers or Rioja wines. In the States, Sam Adams or other quality local brews. Virtually never Miller or Bud (official beer of the World Cup, Germany!)

I agree with Darloup on this one. Colombian Beer sucks. The only one drink-able (if very cold) is Aguilla. The truth is that the best beer in the region is Polar from Venezuela. Anyone who has had a beer from Germany/Switzerland/Belgium knows how good they really are.

The good news is when anyone ask me if I want a beer all I have to do is smile and shout NO! AGUARDIENTE PORFA! And everyone immediately forgets about beer.

Leeroy says on May 10, 2009, 17:19:

I drink Club Colombia probably more than any other beer (here, at least) - I prefer it to Aguila, Costeña, Poker or any of the others.

That said, I am not a beer connoisseur.

While I have lots of respect for those who know and love the technicalities of beer, I (like most of the great masses of the world) am not one of them. For me, beer is a refreshing (and intoxicating) beverage that I drink primarily for its effect. How it tastes is important, but that is secondary. I have drunk many Club Colombia-esque beers in my life (in many different countries): However much beer-gurus may lament it - most beer that is drunk in the world is of the 'watery-lager' variety that Club Colombia belongs to.

You see, experts in whatever field have necessarily different tastes in the products/commodities they purchase/consume than laypeople. This is natural and understandable. What irks me is when said experts then look down upon said laypeople when evaluating their own choices (typically making commentaries along the lines of "Oh! You amateurs! What rubbish!").

I, as a semi-professional photographer, would not opt to buy a simple Kodak camera (well, not, at least, as my primary Camera Of Choice). But I have different needs and expectations to most people when it comes to photography. I don't look down on people who opt to buy a economic "Point-And-Click" camera - they don't care about metering, customisable white balance, or any of the other technical wonders that my camera has that theirs doesn't. Normal-people-who-want-to-take-photos-sometimes have different needs and priorities to me - (say) a mother taking photos of her kids at a school play would do better with a simple PAC camera, I do better with a Canon EOS40D.

Correspondingly, what I want and need from a beer is something that refreshes me, goes down easy, and gets me drunk. Club Colombia does the trick. I won't pretend that it is a "world class beer" (I simply don't know enough about beers to be qualified to make that statement) - but I know that it, and many of its style, works for me.

So, Darloup, I understand and respect that you know about beers and do not (from your position) rate Club Colombia highly. But we, the normal people, have different standards to you :)

Well well...you know guys we could go on about who makes the "best" beer and really its a personal choice. Even though the Europeans were brewing beer ages ago, you got to remember that those same recipes and brewing methods were brought to South / Central America with European immigrants. I love beer and I personally found Club to be a good refreshing and light beer. Same with Aguilla. It was nothing remarkable but good standard pilsner beer that I enjoyed.

And as far as the "best" beers go, if you're talking about Europe it depends on the type of beer you're talking about. If its "helles" or Pilsner style beer then I got to say, you need to go to Slovakia / Czech Republic where they Bohemians pretty much invented the light yellow pilsner beer that most of us drink today. If you like dark and thicker Ales and stouts go to the British Isles. Southern Germany has some great Heffeweisen's and Pilsners as well.

I also am personally of the opinion that beer should be tasty and refreshing yet pretty simple. Some people like dark thick and complex beer tastes and that's fine. But for me once a beer becomes to thick and needs to be "chewed", disected and discussed its more like wine and not beer.

Not to mention that after 2 of these thick and overly complex beers I feel like Im about to pop.

For a light beer i really like a box of miller highlife..the champagne of beers...love that stuff and everytime im through the u.s its a sure bet i buy a box or two.My colombian wife loves it too and certainly helps me consume it..( i drink fast so i get more than she does). It used to be available in canada mabee 15 or 20 years ago but you can,t get it anymore so i sell and carry mgd which i think is also a good american beer just a step below highlife for my taste.
