Clima en Bogotá

¡Hola!

Make it two hours, and the sun comes out at least once a day, sorry people working indoors don´t get to notice it.

When dressing for Bogotá, as I do every day, I consider the following...

1. You never know, no matter what time of year, and no matter what the sky might look like at that moment, what it will be like.

2. It is rarely "hot" (i.e. more than 25 degrees). When it is, it is rarely like that for very long.

3. But sometimes it is.

4. Sometimes it drizzles for a little bit, then the rain stops.

5. But sometimes the fucking gates of hell open, and it chucks down hailstones, snow, weird random localised tornados, and God knows what else.

6. Sometimes it is very windy. The wind can stop and start at any second, and can vary greatly in terms of strength/velocity.

So - what to wear in Bogota?

Don't wear shorts - no-one wears shorts, it is too much of a gamble.

Layer it. Have a T-shirt, shirt and jacket/sweatshirt on. That way, you can have everything done up for when it is cold (most of the time), and can undo your jacket and shirt for when the sun comes out.

It is useless asking what the weather will be like in May/June - no-one knows, and anyone who cites Bogota "seasons" is downright lying, no such thing exists.

Colombians don't really wear shorts unless they're at home kicking it. They look down upon the people who do or they automatically assume they're foreigners, which is the case for the most part. It's rare to see someone wearing shorts in El Centro of most cities unless they just finished working out or playing soccer or if they're gamines or... if they're foreigners.

On holidays like today, they wear shorts in my estrato 4 barrio in Medellín. While sitting on my balcony watching the world go by today, I would guesstimate that 30% of males walking by wore shorts. And they were all Colombians.

Tomtom, this is true as I'm assuming they were just hanging out at home or with family and friends. This will be a very rare site in El Centro or while running an errand or even going to church.

But it's more okay for a man to wear shorts than a woman, correct? I didn't hear the end of it when I put on my "trekking" shorts. Everyone in the family, even the neighbour, kept going on and on about why women can't wear shorts in the city. And I'm thinking, "Yeah but they can wear short, short miniskirts?"

Well, it's not really that you can't but they don't see it as proper attire to go out. You can wear shorts no problem at home or to go swimming, stuff like that. But if you wear shorts to run errands in El Centro, for a doctor's appointment, or even to go to the bank, it's a big no-no.

Now, this might be different in the coasts since it's hotter in those places but my husband is from Tuluá which is very hot city and I never saw people wearing shorts downtown.
