"Clearing houses" for banking?

I am seriously considering moving to Santa Marta later this year....

but while living in Costa Rica - I encountered extra fees via my bank in the states...ATM $3 fee for every $150 approx withdrawn...and 2% everytime I used my card for purchases...this really adds up!

does anyone know about "clearinghouses" and their purpose/benefits for banking primarily....(I knew of a few Americans living in Costa Rica who used a clearinghouse in Florida for banking but never asked why...)

thanks for any info.....

Veronica

p.s. I need to have my income directly deposited into American banks....herein lies my problem....

Don't know about clearing houses But different credit cards have different percentage fees on usage. I have a Capital 1 card that charges 1 percent. Considering that you get the best currency rates that way it's quite a bargain.

I also know that other people here use a citibank account in the US and one with citibank Colombia as a pretty easy way to move money from the US to Colombia without huge fees.

Yeah, I think the best way to go ... is to open a bank account in the foreign country where you live and transfer money from your U.S. bank account to the tune of about $6 per $3000 transfered (for Bank of America, for instance). This also gives you a hedge against the falling dollar.

I have a CitiBank account in Tokyo and have discovered that my CitiBank ATM cards only work at CitiBank Branches. This is the first contry I've ever had this problem. Does anyone know if and where CitiBank branches are in Bogota, Cali, Medellin and Barranquilla? (I have already found the one in Cartagena).

Paypal Get a free Paypal card to use for your ATM card. Withdrawals from the ATM are only $1.

If you are young, skilled, and intelligent, you might want to seriously consider leaving the US now, while you still can.
