I think... Talked with John in Medellin last time I was there, he said it was 6 months and then you had to leave for 72 hours. I was under the impression it was 6 months total for the year, but maybe not.

I'll add to the question, what do you need to do to stay the full six months? Don't you have to go to the embassy to fill out some stuff if you want to stay more than 90 days?

thanks,
joe.

Tourist Visa - 180 Days per 12 month period I recently spent a few minutes in Panama City with the Colombian Consul.
He explained it was 180 days per year. If you spend Jan. 1st.to July 1st. then you have used your 180 days for the year and must remain out of the country for six months before returning. Simply you can remain in colombia for six months out of a twelve month period. Unlike, Costa Rica, you can't leave the country for 72 hours and then return for an additional six months.

Tourist Visa I currently have a 60 day Tourist Visa. I must apply for an extension to remain in Colombia beyond the 60 days. I can apply for a student Visa which I understand is issued for six for twelve months and voids my current tourist visa.

to stay the full 6 months you go to DAS and pay for 60,000 pesos for each 30 day extension.jaja...there are gringos that have been in Colombia for years and have never stepped foot inside a DAS office.but when they get ready to leave Colombia they will have to pay a fine for overstaying their visa.

i dont know you need to ask DAS about fines.but i remember a gringo once telling me that he negotiated the price of the fine,so he didnt end up paying the total amount.

Ha I watched four people in the DAS office argue about whether it's six months for any twelve-month period, or six months per calendar year. They concluded it's six months out of any twelve, but it appears there's some confusion, so it's always worth trying.

Fines can be negotiated. It all depends on the mood of the DAS official, and how sympathetic you can be.

Unless It Has Changed... ,which in Colombia is entirely possible, it is from your Date of Entry.

Example: If you enter on July 22, 2006 you can be in Colombia for no more than 180 days total until July 22, 2007. Of course your initial entry is limited to what is placed in the entry stamp by DAS, usually 60 days. If you go to DAS and extend 120 more days then when you reach the end of the extension you must leave and cannot return without a visa until after July 22, 2007
