Civil Marriage Requirements??? Trying to get married in July '06

Good Afternoon ALL,

I'm new to this and I hope to have a good feedbacks and patience from all of you. I've read through all threads but each situation different. I'm hoping there is someone out there who has a similar situation as I do. I am a US Citizen trying to get married to a Colombian National via Civil Marriage. I just ordered my birth certificate because from what I read I need to have a "fresh" one dated 90 days before the wedding...... I know that I will have to get the birth certificate an apostille seal. Which I have spoken directly with the Secretary of State. The state is New York (Manhattan to be exact). I know once I get the apostille seal there is where the hard part comes in. I'm kind of confused what else I would need? I know that I will need a singlness letter (letra de soltero). My question is Can I just type one up and have my friend sign it? I know I have to get it notorized before I get an apostille seal. Can I just walk into the office to get the letter notarized or should my friend be there in person to get it notorized? Will the Secretary of State be able to give me a seal with a letter I typed up? Also I would like to make sure what addt'l documents I may need. I"ve heard so many different versions that I'm just confused. The bottom line is that I want to fly down to Colombia and make sure I don't get turned away which will be heart-breaking. Can someone please help and shed some light, I appreciate all who have read my thread and can add some thought and for those who can't thanks anyway

Nearly all of these types of questions have been answered previously. Here is the scoop on the Certificado de Solteria: http://www.poorbuthappy.com/colombia/node/11717

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Thanks!! I really appreciate your help in this time of need. I hate to ask more questions but I really want to make sure I have everything ready. In regards to the US Passport will I need to get a notarized copy with an apostille or an Orignal Passport be sufficient enough for a proof of age? Also I live in New Jersey and my birth state is New York, I know I will have to get the apostille seal from the Secretary of State of New York. Should I have the letter of singleness (letra de soltero) done in New York also? Any info/knowledge I may need to get married in colombia is welcome. I really appreciate anyone who will be able to help me out. thanks

Here is the scoop! I just completed my paperwork last weekend. First ask the notary that you plan on using what he or she requires (it is up to them) once you have that. Here is the basic procedure.

Get a certified copy of the document (birth certificate, divorce papers, etc.) For NY get a certified copy from the Dept of Vital Records for the Birth certificate. Then send those documents to the secretary of state (in the state the document was issued). Once you have those. make a copy of the originals and you can send them to this company who will translate them into spanish for you and get the apostille all in one request. http://www.certifiedtranslation.net/

They are reputable and do good work. It does not matter where the originating document is from. They translated for me docs from Iowa and New York and S. Carolina. Turn around time is 3-4 days.

Here is a list of offices of secretary of states for you
http://www.shirleylaw.com/en/resources/apostille_usa.htm

The letters of singleness you can do locally and take to your local secretary of state. I can email you a sample if you like.

Have Fun!!
