Cingular roaming in Colombia

For over a year, my cingular phones would work in Colombia. First I used the Treo 600, then the 650.
Meaning, with my US SIM card in the phone, I could turn it on and make or recieve calls. Of course they were expensive calls, but it was great to be able to recieve
calls. For some reason I haven't figured out, last Aug 2005, my phone locks up as soon as I turn it on. This happens whether I am in Bogota, Cartagena, or Medellin. I can't figure out if it is because it is something with the Treo 650 in international mode, or if it is the service in general. Cingular tells me nothing has changed.
Does anyone have any experience they can share? I'd
like to get it working again.
thanks

Why not just get a Colombian SIM card when you are in COL? Its just swapping the SIM card, after buying it from Moviestar, Ola, or Comcel,etc...all GSM technology....also, the 650 had a software upgrade recently so make sure yours is up-to-date...and if all else fails, pay the bill!! jejejeje...just kidding...the GSM version of the 700 is supposed to be out in August, which is what i am waiting for..i just hope the OS is Windows Mobile 5.0....and confirm your 650 is the unlocked version, right? or does it have the Cingular branding on it? I read something from the Colombian website of treo or palmone which mentioned that the Treo 650 should be 100% compatible with the Colombian GSM and ISP companies as well..

Just my opinion...

Miguel Clavo.... If he has a Cingualar GSM phone, they are locked and they will only work on the Cingular network, or other networks that Cingular has contractual agreements with for the use of their towers. Using a GSM sim card in Colombia will will NOT work unless the phone is unlocked. That is why if you look on Ebay, you will note that all of the GSM phones that they have for sale, all state that the phone is unlocked. The phone is worthless unless the phone is unlocked. Sure, you can use it in Colombia while it is locked....big deal! So what? What good is it if you get charged these rediculous fees like $2.40 a minute? I'll tell ya. You end up like the guy in the post above me with a $242 bill for 29 minutes of talk time. So tell me, how great GSM is. Who cares if you can use the phone around the world? This guy would have been MUCH MUCH better off if he would have left his phone at home and rented a phone in Colombia with one of their local carriers. OR he HAS TO GET THE PHONE UNLOCKED. Only then will he be able to buy a sim card from a Colombian carrier while in Colombia. If it is not unlocked, he will not be able to put in any other sim card but the one that is programmed for that carrier. You can bet on what I just wrote.

I dont bet on anything you write, Gman, and you can bet on that! lI know about the SIM card swapping as all of my phones have been unlocked, thank you very mucyh! (with the exception of a satellite phone i was issued)...my "unlocked/unbranded" razr using cingular and gsm technology workd just fine. He can simply send the phone into to cingular for them to "unlock" it, +/- $40 or, he can purchase the software and instruction on "how to do it yourself" also on ebay if you type in "treo 650" and scroll near the end of the hits...it will be there......Being locked means that while in the US he can only use the Cingular Network, but internationally he can use any GSM network......i used to have 8 separate phone for all over the world, now i only use GSM quad phones, as the satellite phone gets returned in 18 days!!!! jejejeje.....BTW, G5, "Using a GSM sim card in Colombia will will NOT work unless the phone is unlocked"..mentiras...i suggested buying a separate SIM cards from a Colombian company such as OLA, Moviestar/Telefonica, or Comcel.(umm, in non-legal language this means that he would be paying Colombian rates, much cheaper, and would not be paying for incoming calls)......not using the SAME card he uses in the US from Cingular...the US card will work like the OP mentioned, "contrary to your truths" but his rates will be ridiculously high.........Tell you how great the GSM is? Hmmm...do your homework, please before spouting from the wrong blowhole....less than 10% of the countries use CDMA or TDMA technology....the rest of civilization uses GSM.....you are right, what good is GSM? no good unless you like to leave you house every now and then to visit your foreign neighbors...=) BTW, the Education was free, and you are welcome! (the complimentary first visit!) jejejeje...

BTW, again... "If it is not unlocked, he will not be able to put in any other sim card but the one that is programmed for that carrier. You can bet on what I just wrote.".....Treo 600 and 650 and the Razr are quadbands and can be GSM techology if purchased that way....no need to unlock them to use the other cards....read the OP, his worked fine in the International mode...and it is simply a matter of swapping the Sim cards out even with a locked phone, or at worst some simple reprogramming at the Colombian service center where you buy the sim card (,,locked means while in the US you have to use the service branded on the phone...BTW, i hate taking money from people so easily..there is no challenge to it! jejejeje

Blakester, that is because you used the US CIngular simm card to call the US....so, in effect, if you wanted to call locally while in Colombia, your call travels through Colombian networks to reach the US, gets rerouted from the US back to Colombia, to the local network and then on to the person you called. Expensive? you bet...its like flying from one part of Medellin to the other part via the US!! Expensive, ya think??

Unlock You can buy an unlocked Treo 650 but not the 700 since that one is unlockable from Verizon. Perhaps the new Motorola Q is unclockable? Not sure.
I use my Cingular/Motorola Sliver L7 in Bogota with a Comcel prepago card. When I first got the phone here in the states, I took it down to the local cellular reseller (Alert Cellular) that sells all the cellular services and it cost me $20 to unlock it on the spot... a lot faster than ordering a kit to do it myself.
Incidentally, I had T-Mobile when I deployed to the sand and T Mobile actually emailed me back the unlock code for free. I don't think Cingular does that.

I know all about unlocking phones and using Colombian SIM cards.
The question is, I want to recieve US calls on my US phone.
I have Colombian phones for all my local calls and Vonage to call the US. But I want my US contacts to be able to call me when I am traveling on my US phone as if I haven't left. As of last Aug, it stopped working after working for 2 years. Anyone have any experience in this specific area?
Many thanks,

ACG....the GSM version of the Treo 700 is "supposedly" to be released in Aug 2006, according to some friends that work on that project...

Clavo...I couldn't Give a damn whether you would bet on anything I write or not. You make so many posts here, most of which is a bunch of nonsense, a lot of which has about as much validity as what the preecher pontificates on a street corner. In the case of cingular, since I am a cingular customer of 8 years, when I speak about the damn company, I know what the hell I am talking about. You just pontificate a bunch of nonsense, that may or may not have some validity.

If this guy wants to sift through your borscht, good luck to him. By the way Mr. know it all, if the phone is a Cingular GSM phone, I don't care what make or model it is, is locked, and it must be unlocked to change SIM cards. If you don't know that, then you are quite misinformed. Sure you can use the phone with a Cingular SIM card, but you will pay big time, as that guy above pointed out.

Clavo, one of these days you will attempt to discuss a point, instead writing in circles making few if any valid points while doing so.

Your "I don't bet on anything yor write" comment was what prompted me to go off on you. If you are going to provoke something, expect something back. All, I did was inform you of your misinforming people. You make these silly jokes, and nutty comments on these extended thread that appear in chains, and I or nobody says a damn thing about what you write, but because I make a comment like, "bet on it", or "you can bank on it" you construe that as if I am playing God. You're the only one that seems to be so hypersensitive. Or, is it that you really can't deal with the fact that sometimes, someone might actually no more than you about something? Maybe huh? And by the way, Mr. lock and key, I was not born yesterday, I understand that the phone is locked and unlocked with a programing change that can be done with the buttons on the phone, and not done by a locksmith, but thanks for enlightening me.

All I am saying is, keep your personal comments to yourself. Follow the rules, attach the subject, not the person and I'll do the same when it comes to you. Otherwise, if you're going to take shots at me, expect me to retaliate in kind.

Sorry, MFC, but you will get used to G5..... “I would be glad not to read your gibberish on the condition that you leave the personal insults about what I write out of your posts. Your "I don't bet on anything yor write" comment was what prompted me to go off on you.”

Where have I read this before? “You can bet on what I just wrote.”..i was simply informing you that I choose not to bet on what you just wrote…and you find offense in my choice not to do as you suggested? If you don’t like my post suggestions to the OP, why do you choose to read them and attack them? Anger management classes are in order here. Nobody is forcing you to read my posts, at least no real person.

“if you are going to provoke something, expect something back.”

Reminds me of the kindergarten mentality.

“ All, I did was inform you of your misinforming people.”
You are misinformed about misinformation. But I am not surprised here.

“You make these silly jokes, and nutty comments on these extended thread that appear in chains, and I or nobody says a damn thing about what you write, but because I make a comment like, "bet on it", or "you can bank on it" you construe that as if I am playing God.”

Humor is actually a good thing, and is rumored to extend one’s lifetime. Again, if another poster does not take your comments as Gospel or seriously, you get upset?

“You're the only one that seems to be so hypersensitive. Or, is it that you really can't deal with the fact that sometimes, someone might actually no more than you about something?

Before someone dumber than you points it out: no is know. But you claim to know everything about everything. Like i am the first PBHer to point this out or to notice it. Even “barristers” don’t know everything, Gman. Do you think that the OP might want to hear various thoughts and opinions on the subject, or do you feel that only your opinion is relevant? You can call me anything you want, just do not call me late to dinner……

“Maybe huh? And by the way, Mr. lock and key, I was not born yesterday, I understand that the phone is locked and unlocked with a programing change that can be done with the buttons on the phone, and not done by a locksmith, but thanks for enlightening me.

That was a test, and you successfully passed! Congratulations! And I know you were not born yesterday, as that would make you only 2 days old, and a quite mature 2 day old person.

"All I am saying is, keep your personal comments to yourself. Follow the rules, attach the subject, not the person and I'll do the same when it comes to you. Otherwise, if you're going to take shots at me, expect me to retaliate in kind. "

I am up for it….are you? And I will “attach the subject” once I figure out what you mean.

My aplogies to the OP, and other interested parties, but I hope my comments helped out. If you are interested, you can call Cingular Customer Service (phone number from their website), and once you get past the sales people and people who will just read from a prepared company script, ask to talk to the Technical Support people like I did, who gave me the information I passed on. Has worked fine for me for a couple of years now. Contrary to the claims to the contrary. =)

Then that begs the question, given such wealth, why would you spend half you life on PBH? You can't take your wealth to your next life.

Typical Clavo....hmmm keeping track of me are you? =)

Good Morning, Sunshine! I am happy that your were thinking about me this morning!

You write a lot of bull, and you lie. You might want to check what I actually wrote (about myself and Chicago)

Oh, why do I bother?...the “popular” reference was to your comment about “popularity” on PBH which you brought up and obviously feel a need to be wanted by some people, at least…. .duhhhhh…..Bull,,,,,,huh?....i thought Chicago had the rights to that name? “Chicago Bulls”, meaning multiple Chicagoans speaking a dialect of bulllllll……….

But if you think that the only way you can make your point is by distorting what others write, then it only goes to show that you are one of those guys that when they can't argue with anything of substance, they try to change what other people say.....so be it.

You are like a broken Britanny Spears record…..irritating at best……again, I was poking fun at your reference to being anything noteworthy here on PBH or in Chicago…And btw, what was the topic of arguing? I wasn’t arguing anything, I was giving a poster some information about TREO smartphones using cingular service, and other “worldphones” like the Razr V3. And some simpleton wants to turn that into a debate? And you say I need to get a life??? If the shoes fits, then, I say, enjoy your new set of shoes….jejejeje…oopps, sorry, hahahahaha……the topic was not about cingular service with the free phones you get, but the quadband GSM phones used for international purposes……….

Also, about your financial status. Do you really think that anyone is all that impressed by your self declared status of independent wealth?

My statement about being “financially independent” was in response to your claim I have nothing to do….now, take note, barrister, I will type slower now, ….as if “I was independently wealthy” and that “I don’t even need to work”……I will explain for you in simple terms…..NO, I am not independently wealthy, I do have to work, well, at least for 16 more days, then my government pension kicks in..so I can work and kill time on the computer like everyone else …..get it? Or do I need The Big A to explain it for you?...…But, only if I had been able to convince Tio Pablo to kick down some money before he was killed…oh, well, that is a different story……(and please don’t take that one literal, also, …no, I am not related to Pablo Escobar……sheeeshhh…)..does the word “gullible” ring a bell???? Or, how about “Hook, Line, and Sinker”?? ..Not the brightest bulb on the porch?.....But I do recall a person gloating about how their lawyer/accounting office snagged a well-known account that everyone on PBH would recognize, and how you were going to financially benefit in a granddddddddddd way…….One guess as to who that person was? Only one, though, no cheating….

Then that begs the question, given such wealth, why would you spend half you life on PBH? You can't take your wealth to your next life…

……..Truer words never spoken, and I am impressed with your depth. But, given that I hit 50 in less than a week, that means you are suggesting that I have been on PBH for twentyfive years……hmmm…sound about right for Chicagoan math?....i think you can pull up how long I have been registered on PBH, more or less a year if that…..Had difficulties in math in school, Sr. Abogado? …Do the math, and then update your estimate of how much time I spend on PBH…..and btw, multi-tasking comes naturally, so its very easy to do….

Enjoy the rest of your day, and really, don’t try to think of me too much, Sunshine……..

Swap Cingular SIM into Unlocked GSM Phone Have you tried swapping your Cingular SIM card into a different unlocked GSM phone? This way you can determine if its the Phone or the service. If your Cingular SIM works in a different phone, then it's definately the Treo.

Also, make sure you have Roaming enabled on your Treo.

Cingular I used my Blackberry with Cingular under their International Travlers Plan. When I arrived three weeks ago it did not work like they said it would. I kept having it search for available networks. It finally found three networks one was Comcel and the other two were not named. Anyway I would manually set it to the various networks and it would then work for awhile. It would then seem that after a period of time it would no longer accept the networks as I would get a note at the top of the screen "Connection refused". I would then switch to the other network and it would work. I would suggest searching for a Netork manually like this but have really no idea how I got it working. I was able to recieve calls from the USA and get my emails until I would notice the message that I was no longer on the network. It was wierd as I would just reset it and it would work again. I don't know if this helps but that was my experience/.
