“Chévere" From Nigeria

Interesting article in this weeks SEMANA (edition 1359) describes African origin of some common Colombian words. In addition to “chévere" coming from Nigeria here are some more examples:

Biche, Banano, Ñame, Marimba, Guarapo, Tanga, Cola, Ganga (which comes from an African village that sold two slaves for the price of one) Mucama? Dengue, Chéchere, Burundanga, Ñapa, Candonga? Mondongo, Caramba (If you happen to know the meaning of the words followed by a question mark please enlighten)

The article goes on to describe a plethora of musical styles: mapalé, aguabajo, currulao, bullerengue, cumbia etc.

Candonga is an earring, the pendant type. Mucama is a chamber maid.

I hear it all the time in Cali. It's a little passé but lots and lots of people still use it. Actually, all those African words from the list are common usage in Cali.

Roci, Are you kidding? "Chévere" is as Colombian a word as "vaina". Desi may be right about it not being the latest term, but it is still used a lot.
