chronic fatigue syndrome also known as M.E.

As a matter of general interest to me, does anyone know anyone suffering this condition in Colombia, perhaps Desi might know? I see too much of it in europe and wonder if lifestyle has something to do it ie. not having to get a job and get off their a** , saw a girl today age 22 yrs in wheelchair with a stick, but neurologically normal, never worked in her life planned to open a home beauty parlour but had a "relapse" before due to start.

Lifestyle Has Everything To Do With It I would venture to guess that even though Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and many closely related diseases can be found world wide, the ratio between those who have it in Colombia and other countries with a similar culture vs. those who have it in the U.S. is very large. Although there are a number of biological and genetic factors involved; what we breath, eat, and especially our level of stress have a lot of influence on how diseases develop and florish; particularly CFS.

Fibromyalgia? I think you are also describing the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Here's a link to some common symptoms.

I don't know about fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. I have no problem with believing some folks are more sensitive than others to pain and have more difficulty recovering from exertion. But with no reasonable tests or biochemical markers, it seems to me there is a strong psychological component to these conditions. People with CFS insist that the problem is physiological -- both to avoid the stigma of psychological disease and to promote the notion these are real diseases. They may be. As diagnoses of exclusion, and with so much variation and overlap, it is hard to conclude these diseases are remotely understood at present. D-ribose? No proof this is deficient in folks who say they have ME/CFS.

I think you're correct Tequila but, I have seen these people recover, time and time again, with a properly functioning nervous system, and just starting to eat mostly fruits and vegetables.

But, it's the med-guys' fault, for once again, creating yet another new syndrome, or cruch upon which people can rely (or, be less than they ought to be.)

The use of D-ribose in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia: a pilot study.Teitelbaum JE, Johnson C, St Cyr J.
Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers, Dallas, TX, USA. Endfatigue at aol.com

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are debilitating syndromes that are often associated with impaired cellular energy metabolism. As D-ribose has been shown to increase cellular energy synthesis in heart and skeletal muscle, this open-label uncontrolled pilot study was done to evaluate if D-ribose could improve symptoms in fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome patients. DESIGN: Forty-one (41) patients with a diagnosis of FMS and/or CFS were given D-ribose, a naturally occurring pentose carbohydrate, at a dose of 5 g t.i.d. for a total of 280 g. All patients completed questionnaires containing discrete visual analog scales and a global assessment pre- and post-D-ribose administration. RESULTS: D-ribose, which was well-tolerated, resulted in a significant improvement in all five visual analog scale (VAS) categories: energy; sleep; mental clarity; pain intensity; and well-being, as well as an improvement in patients' global assessment. Approximately 66% of patients experienced significant improvement while on D-ribose, with an average increase in energy on the VAS of 45% and an average improvement in overall well-being of 30% (p

Tequila is right; either of those diagnoses are a huge reason NOT TO GET THE JOB DONE, BUT TO CONTINUE TO MAKE EXCUSES AND WHINE.

As a doctor, I don't commonly diagnose either of these conditions. The criteria for diagnosis are awfully vague. I don't feel either of these disease are well understood.

I also read a lot of articles. A pilot study of 41 people isn't sufficiently powered to prove anything. You also can't prove cause and effect with this type of study. There was no control group, randomization is not discussed, and CFS and fibromyalgia are, in fact, different conditions. D-ribose is cheap, and if it does work, that's great. I don't think the pilot study you quoted proves that, but I'll admit I don't see a lot of these patients, and that's just my opinion.

If I had CFS, I might try it too. Cheap, no harm done, and if it works, so much the better. I'm an exercise fanatic myself. It's nice when a problem can be solved by making a healthier lifestyle change instead of prescribing a medicine -- natural or otherwise. Neither natural medicines or drug company ones are always harmless, cheap or well-studied. You are well aware of the hundreds of products used by bodybuilders which do little (but this one is different!). Vitamins and antioxidants are fine, but are better taken in natural foods than as supplements -- it makes me laugh when the media concentrates on a handful of chemicals when foods contain so many, and their interaction is so complex. It takes a lot of hubris to assume that isolating and taking excess amounts of one of these thousands of things is going to be the factor that changes everything for the better.
