Christmas in Melgar

Hola peeps... I am looking for info on hotels or equivalent for a visit during the Christmas season as I don not want to spend my time in Bogota. I have no problem with Sofitel but would be interested in other peoples thoughts.

I can't imagine spending 2 weeks in Bogota during Christmas without family/friends, etc. so I am looking for an alternative. My wife's family is in Barranquilla but I prefer not to go there as I do not want to be the Gringo Claus and of course, I don't hablo Espanol. Just can't stand sitiing around and having every relative within 40 kms parade in front of me with some comment I cannot understand. True... I'm the wierd one.. but still.... it is uncomfortable and I don't think they understand that because I'm from Canada, I can't thrrow money around.

Just looking for some advice.. and if possible, those members from the UK with all the answers to everything.... don't reply!

Many thanks
Terry2

Why you marry a Colombian ,
Colombians are all about family ,and Xmas is for family ,you can bet your last Canada dollar ,give your wife the chance pick any where to go or be with her family at Xmas ,its a no brainer ,its the family every time, and if your wife is happy then so should you be seeing her this way.so for get about what you want and take your wife to Barranquilla ,its her Xmas as well.
And learn Spanish or sod off back home.

Although Melgar and Villa de Leiva are much better places than Barranquilla, you should go with your relatives and in-laws.

You can look for hotels in Girardot and Carmen de Apicala, there are a few condominios that could be up for rent as well.

Aprendo un poco de español pero yo no sé lo suficiente como para salir yo de cárcel.
Her family lives in the Los Olivos neighborhood of Barranquilla which is 'dirt poor''. I know I am supporting them indirectly so I am exercising my right as 'husband' to have some family time of my own without the agonizing reception line of all the cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. It would perhaps be different if I could converse in their language, but to sit there with a stupid grin on my face pretending to be overjoyed is not in the cards for me.I moved my wife and stepdaughter to Bogota in order to get away from the brother and the constant ploys to get money from the 'girl with the gringo'. Brother with a gun, and an attitude, just pissed me off.
I understand all the sentiments expressed here about 'family' and I agree in principle but this is also MY Christmas and I want to spend it with MY family.
And... ujay..... sod off gave you away. You have to read the entire message........

sod off gave you away,as to what.....

i know how family are ,i had it all ,asking for money ,always turning up at meal times, every long weekend we want to get away some one wants to tag along,go out to eat ,they eat and drink all they want with you but never offer a cent ,ive even had the sister in law picking up the tips i left, while we have been away they have gone to my house and stayed there and got the maid cooking for them, you name it i had it with the familys ,
with your wife find out who it is the mother may be she most cares for ,then over the xmas you can bring to mother to you ,that way your wife gets her mum and you dont get the rest of the family.

all im trying to say maybe not too well ,is try to keep the peace ,and both of you can enjoy xmas.
as they like to eat and put the baby in the bed at midnight xmas and eat good time to get the mum ,then new year you can both go out dancing ,new year is better any way.

its not a put you down in any way ,its just letting you know what you are finding out now ,we have all been though it many times.
for me apart from playing firework fights in the street with the kids xmas sucks here any way.
oz ,uk ,spain ,or thailand is where i like to be at xmas.
just my pennys worth.

Just to make it clear here and elsewhere, Colombian families are not always at the receiving end, and NOT all relatives are asking for money or anything else, there are many hardworking and much more giving and helping out not only colombiand but foreigneers as well.

Just to make it clear here and elsewhere,
from one end of colombia to the other ,if a gringo is in that family ,he will be asked for money ,he will be offered all sorts of Business deals,I have always found it funny how a Colombia can come up with all these ideas when using other peoples money.
