Chivas whiskey in my checked bag???

I would like to bring a bottle of Chivas whiskey in my checked bag on a Continental flight into Cali. Will this be an issue or is this allowed? I did a search of PBH and didn't find anything.
Thanks!

I should be alright in the checked luggage. The only risk is that the bottle breaks in your bag. Make sure you pack it well!!

on this topic is there an alcohol limit that one may bring into Colombia??
Though the cops only seem to care if you are bringing in an 'unreported' bag full of cash.

Thanks, that would be a disaster... I just worry that those guys that check my luggage one last time before I leave the airport will take it. I guess, nothing ventured...

Security in the US should be no problem as long as it is not in your carry-on. There is a limit on the amount of alcohol you can bring into Colombia, but I dunno how much it is, or how strongly it is enforced. I do know 1 bottle is totally fine.

Colombian Customs allows 2 bottles of booze, duty free, into the country.

And since those two bottles are given to you as you board the plane, they in fact become carryons, i did this last month. i have also brought in more than two, but then it becomes a crapshoot.

Colombian customs has a limit of 15 pirated cds/dvds... I'm sure they'll let you bring a bag or two full of booze into the country

Actually the bigger risk isn't that the bottle will break in your checked luggage but rather that the booze will be stolen by airline employees or TSA.

Just to clarify... Can I bring a bottle from home or just from the Duty free shop?

Cheers Terry says on Jun 20, 2008, 14:36:

If they're in your checked luggage it doesn't matter where you bought them. You would have carefully packed them into your luggage at home, long before you reach the airport.

You can't put Duty Free stuff into your checked luggage because Duty Free is in the Departures area, the other side of security, after you've checked in. All Duty Free purchases are brought onto the aircraft as carry-on.

Make sense?

If you are bringing from home, try to get one of those gift boxes from the liguor store. The rigid shape and estra stuffing will go a long way to protect your bottle.

One last thing to consider... If you have a very specific brand you want to bring, then absolutely buy it in advance and pack it into your checked luggage.

If you're not choosy, then you have the option to buy at Duty Free. Remember though, Duty Free has a very limited selection compared to a real liquor store. Some Duty Free stores have websites or a telephone number where you can confirm which brands they have in stock.

And if what you are bringing is super-expensive liquor, be sure to save your receipts from the purchase of it so that you can prove the value of the stolen bottles when you have to file your claim with the airline for the liquor they (or TSA) stole from your checked luggage!

juicebud,

Buy it from the duty free , it will be cheaper and then you can bring it on the plane as a carry on..

I can say that I have purchased 2 large bottles at the Duty free store at the airport and not had a single problem on any occassion. I had no trouble finding the brands I like for bourbon (Woodford Reserve & Knob Creek at MIA) and tequila (Patron at FLL) at the airport.

I cannot provide firsthand knowledge for packing in your checked luggage or for more than 2 bottles, but I do recall over-hearing another passenger saying that we could bring up to 4 with us from the duty-free store. Conclusion---firsthand confirmation that 2 bottles purchased from the duty-free store is certainly not a problem.

I'm not sure about all of Colombia, but i have seen Chivas in Medellin, and for the couple of dollars price difference you might want to think about getting it in Colombia.. No hassles and no spills..

I would suspect that taking something out of your luggage and offering it to a friend says a whole lot more than, "Let's go down to the Exito; I want to buy something special for you."

Juicerbud - I've found the best place to pack bottles in most checked luggage is in the spine where the retractable handle is located. It's nice and rigid and seems to be well protected. I would put the bottle in a plastic bag (in case it does break) and use your clothes as padding. I've brought back many, many bottles using this technique and have never had any break.

Yup, that would work too (of course....I don't wear athletic socks....so it doesn't work for me!).

And if you ever want to bring bottles of beer, put them in your shoes in your suitcase. They fit perfectly, unless you have small feet!

i was bringing back a whole case of caraffs, 12 bottles 50/50, ron medellin and guaro. the flight was from medallo to bogota to miami an on to tucson arizona. a gift for my business partner who was back from his part of our work in london...

i fly from medellin to bogota, get off the plane, am walking across the tarmak to the terminal and i look back at the plane where they have the 'walking ramp' up aside the plane to discharge the cargo....down comes my case of booze. about half way down the ramp, some oaff thinks he'll just grab it and man handle it to the cart, get's hold of it, lifts it--kinda--and drops it. dig it, 11 bottles of booze, smashed. i forget what a caraff costs in those days--the early 90's--but it was close to 200.00 us for it...shot in the ass. don't need to tell you how much i was compensated by avianca...zip. it was my fault. right! up you's avianca.

If you have a connection - buy your Chivas from a military store (i did that last year when traveling to India) - they were far cheaper than at the duty free store at the airports (they have no taxes on them at the military store to begin with - so they are 'duty free' at the very least). I just placed the two bottles (in their little cardboard packing) between clothes and they arrived safely. Good Luck

The limit for most airlines is that you are limited to no more than five one liter bottles. Also nothing stronger that 140 proof ( Sorry Bacardi 151 fans). It must be packed in a sealable bottle or flask.
