rhyde....my many years in medallo have been perplexed by the absense of chiropractors.

my back was broken when i was young and i have used chiropractors since about '66 or 67 continuously. no such luck. i contacted palmer chiropractor in the u.s. to see if they had some alumni in medellin specifically or colombia generally. no luck. now, or course, that can change. i can only wish you good luck. back when i had money, i'd fly from medellin to berekeley (calif) for an adjustment. that adjustment would cost about a grand.

well, the e is off...let's see what comes up. i'll call another here in daytona later today.

the dr in berkeley, is world class and is as well a teacher.

the dr here in daytona is a sports physician. both are palmer graduates.

I am also a chiropractor, living in the caribbean and I have also noticed the shortage of chiros in colombia. I have located a few chiros (on the net) in bogota and bucaramanga but that's about it. I am also interested in knowing what are the laws and procedures required to practice in colombia.

Great thread, keep the posts coming. I had a problem with my neck that gave me the worst migranes and my chiropractor fixed me all up. I loooooooooove chiropractors, it's the best therapy but every time I say that in Colombia they look at me like I'm crazy and tell me it's not a good idea to go see them.

Whatever, I still think chiropractors are great doctors so if anyone sets up shop in Medellín or finds out of a good one, let me know!

Thanks guys.

In Cartagena, we scoured the phone directory and internet for a chiro and found nothing.

Instead, went to an Austrian guy doing shiatsu massage who got the problem sorted out immediately.

que nota!

it's amazing how few US trained chiropractors there are in Colombia. It makes me wonder if I will run into road blocks as I attempt to have my Doctor of Chiropractic degree validated by the Ministry of Education in Bogota. They call it convalidacion or homologacion of an academic degree received outside of Colombia. Since there are no chiropractic schools in Colombia, they have nothing to compare it to. I wonder if the Colombian association of medical doctors is blocking the entry of chiropractors into colombia the way the American Medical Association tried to maintain its monopoly over health care in the US until the Supreme Court ruled their monopoly was illegal.

Very few Colombians know what chiropractic is, so below is a very basic explanation.

what is chiropractic? the chiropractic manipulation of a joint has been proven (by the American Orthopedics Association....thank you) to have the following three effects:

1. an adjustment causes a reflex that tells the muscles around the joint to relax
2. an adjustment increases blood circulation to the joint
3. an adjustment improves the joint mobility / joint play required for a healthy joint

all of these result in a healthier joint, accelerated healing, and pain reduction

bottom line, the chiropractor helps the body heal itself through the above effects of a chiropractic manipulation. and everybody always asks what the popping/cracking sound is (the audible pop is not necessary to achieve the above effects).

* What causes the popping sound during an adjustment?

The popping or cracking sound you sometimes hear is created when gases and fluids in the joint shift during the adjustment. These sounds may or may not be heard during the adjustment. The quality of your adjustment should never be judged by the sound it makes.

So I am planning to open a chiropractic office in Medellin. I think the stressed out paisas can benefit from some non-drugged induced, natural healing. I expected to treat some non-Colombians here, but I have no idea how many ex-pats live in Medellin.

Anybody know how many ex-pats live in Medellin more than half time? How about a break down by nationality?

As a paid up member of the bad back society (and no sympathy folks, it's purely down to my sedentary lifestyle!!) I too am looking for a chiropractor in Bogota, so anyone got any recommendations? Just looking up the phone book can be a recipe for disaster!!

Joelg, it's amazing what you said about foreign chiros possibly being stopped from practicising here, so do the "chiros" here practice under another job title??

I have visited a local "chiro"in Villeta, called Hanibal. (The world and his mother knows him in Villeta), his practice (read front room) was packed to the rafters at 8:00 in the morning, and although I felt a bit better after his treatment, I need someone more regular and in Bogota...

turns out i can't legally practice in colombia. they don't have an equivalent degree here, so they can't validate my degree. there are some colombians practicing, not sure what their training is, but they call themselves quiropracticos and they either practice informally under the radar or actually have other degrees in medicine/alternative medicine (a degree here) and practice under that.

DID YOU KNOW??? THAT the president of Parker Chiropractic College in Dallas, Texas is.... one Dr Fabrizio Mancini... (I know, sounds Italiano, but) is UN COLOMBIANO???

Do your search... and, send him an email. He left Colombia 'BACK' (no pun intended)..in about 1978, for EEUU, to become a neurosurgeon, but instead.. he discovered Chiropractic and hence...

He also is the Co_Author of "Chicken Soup for the Chiropractic Soul", with .. yeah, those two guys.. MV Hansen and the other one.

Maybe he can help.

jajjaja.. medical propaganda even exist in Locombia??? I thought those guys were way to busy to be bad-mouthing my profession.

JAIME BRAVO OSMAN;
622-0625 in Bogota.
She has used him.
He lives in or practices in the same building.
She says he's good.
Who knows?

If for some reason, you think you need his email, then send me a personal note.
Thanks, and good luck.

Let me know, if the guy seems to know what he's doing.

She says... everyone in Bogota is stressed; works too many hours... killing themselves, working, fighting the big city life.

Why do Colombians think that in comparison, it is so much more stressful there?
I'm missing something, although I've been there six times and been involved with this place on a daily basis for almost four years. Life in the eeuu has it's own stress. Yes. It's different.

I think, it's really only a 'STATE OF MIND'.
I think it's something to do with the BLENDING OF ... TECHNOLOGY into a Place that is, in
comparison, a world more like that which existed in the EEUU a hundred years ago, in Oh! So many ways.

Many thanks for the info goin_south, wil give her a call.

As for my stress, mine (both mental and physical) was all acquired back home in Dublin, in comparison, life in Bogota is a breeze... granted I don't work full time either, and no more getting up early on dark cold mornings, standing on a crammed commuter train for 40 minutes.!!.
