Cheapest way to call Colombia anyone???

I have friends in Cali, Medellin and other parts of Colombia. I've used calling cards purchased off the web and have been burnt by lies. Lately I've been buying $5 orbitel cards at the local bodega, but there's got to be a better way............

I've tried Tel3 and Pingo, but didn't care for either. I've also use skype, it work ok, but I don't want to be tethered to my pc.

Ideally I would like a VOIP setup with a colombian phone number, and the cell phone calls for les than 10 cents a minute.

Has anybody tried the orbitel linea directa service?

I know you don't want to be tethered to a PC, but have a look at http://www.voipbuster.com/en/mobile.html, allows you to use the cheap/free calls of voipbuster (I use it all the time for free internaional calls, and the call quality is excellent.

I haven't tried the mobile version I'm suggesting, but it might be worth a look...

the cheapest way is to buy vonage phone service and for 25 dollars a month or for an extra 14.99 extra a month for latin american package you can call 10 countries in south america and central america and talk as long as you want 24/7. or if you have a girlfriend there activate vonage here and send it to her in colombia. vonage is a voip so she needs broadband internet.

Does the Vonage Latin American Package include calls to cellphones in colombia?

Never mind - Did a quick check on the vonage site:

Colombia (Cellular and Premium)
Your number is not included in any of our Unlimited International Calling plans. Our Standard low International Rate for this call is only18¢/per min.

I'm thinking I'll give the Orbitel "Tu Linea Directa" service a try. It's only a 6 month service commitment. For $40 a month you get a Local Colombian number your friends and family can call you on, and a $30 credit for making calls at 1.95 cents/min for calls to residential lines in Colombia and 5.75 cents/min for calls to mobiles.

They offer cheaper packages with less calling credit, but I think this one would best suit my needs.

My mom used to get Telecom at those Mexican bodegas around Jackson Heights...only like 2 bucks. Also, on 74th street under the 7 train this hindu guy used to sell like 3 cards for $5... you save $1 for the empanada.

I have found the gold oro phone cards cheap and reliable. The only times we have problems are on high traffic times like Christmas Day, Mother's Day, etc. I suspect that all systems have problems at those times.

Ten dollars gets us 210 minutes.

You might try https://www.nishty.com/?
Scroll down to the "conectate" card. 2.66 cents per minute to Colombia land line.
6.95 cents per minute to Colombia cellular. No connection fees.
10.00 card gets you 375 min - land line (143 min cellular).
Card is instantly e-mailed to you.
Best deal we've found.

I go to 1vende.com and buy either ETB or Telecom phone cards. Those are pretty good.

Depends where you are calling from..........I call from Canada for 2.5 cents a minute up to 1,000 minutes. Over 1,000 minutes is .05 cents a minute. No difference in rates for land lines or cel calls. If you are making calls that last a long period of time you can get a card (don't have it handy) and costs .95 cents connection fee and ZERO cents per minute, you only pay the connection fee.
