Hello dear friends,
I am plannign on returning to Colombia in early October from the UK does anyone have any advice on the cheapest way of doing it. I am quite happy to fly into Venezuala or Ecuador if it will make it any cheaper.
Any ideas would be more than welcome.

thur says on Aug 12, 2006, 01:29: Too late... Honestly, you're too late to get the cheapest ticket available. The earlier you buy, the cheaper it might be. I bought my ticket (for the record: from The Netherlands) for the last week of October in May. The deal I got is nowhere to be found... all prices I've seen so far around my travel dates are about 100-150 euro more expensive. - pbase.com/thur 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

I've always understood that flying via Miami is best. If you can afford it stay the night in Miami, there are cheap hotels with free transfers and then you arrive fresh in Colombia for your friends, family, whatever. From miami you can go to any town in Colombia instead of going to Bogota and transferring there. As you know there are no direct flights so why bother going via Paris or Madrid when you can fly direct to Miami?

miamimike says on Aug 14, 2006, 04:37: May Be harder to do a US Flagged Merchant Vessel I have heard this many times in the past but Nowdays you first must possess a US Merchant Mariner's Document issued by the Coast Guard. It has been this way since the 70s. Prior to this, if you could secure a "Letter of Committement" from a steamship company you could go to the nearest US Coast Guard Marine Inspection Office and get this Merchant Mariner's Document with a entry level endorsement of wiper, ordinary seaman or messman. This is no longer true, nowdays no such thing as a letter of committement-you must already have a Merchant Mariner's document to even approach shipping company or Union Hall. I sailed in the Merchant Marine from 1980-1987(far east and northern europe runs) as a Able Seaman, Deep Water, unlimited in the US Mercchant marine and really I would NOT sail on any flag of convenience ships such as Panama. Liberia ect.Too dangerous, dirty,,, The Northern European countrie's merchant marines are good also clean, safe-Norway, Denmark, England ect. Most Ships today are not in Port long enough to let one do any indepth visiting of any of the countries you pull into.Contrast that to 40 years ago(or pre-container ship days) where on a Tramp Steamer one may be in port 1-2 weeks unloading/loading cargo. Tramp Steamers were called "Tramps" due to the meandering routes they took to pick up cargoes, nothing to do with the condition of the Vessel. Also this idea of jumping on/off a ship of your choosing, well its never been that way; you sign "Articles of a Voyage" for a preset number of Days and you are expected to fulfill this commitement. If you jumped ship so to speak, breaking your agreeement, you are "Blackballed" and will never ship again with that company. Word gets around quickly these days of the Internet so not a good idea to bail out in some exotic port of call. I had a great time when I sailed, allowing me to see many places on the government's dime(I always shipped with the Federal Goverment's arm of the merchant marine-army corp of engineers and Militray Sealift Command-Pacific br)not to mention it payed good money then and better now. Its also known as the Clay Hotel on Washington ave around 17st.I beleive the rates are still under $20 nightly and its close to all the south beach action and 5 minutes from the beach.. You can catch the Metro Bus(miami public transportation)from the Airport for under $2. I'm not familiar with the hotels in Palmira, but the town is sizable and should offer a variety of tourist housing alternatives. "When shall we three meet again?
