Cheap Flights Within Colombia - Satena

The owner of the blacksheep told me about a deal for flights with Satena. I went and checked it out and they are good deals. You have to buy your flights on a Wed, but you can take the actual flight any day you want. It is valid up until November.

As an example, my flight to Bogota one way will cost me 150,000 pesos including all taxes which is pretty good compared to my last flight of aroun 230,000 pesos.

If coming into and out of medellin you have the added advantage that the flight lands and takes off within the city saving the 40,000 pesos trip tothe external airport!!

Easy Fly also has some really good deals. A few months ago, they were running 10.000 COP airfares. By the time taxes and other charges were added, it ended up being 80.000 each way which is still the best deal going. From a quick glance at their site www.easyfly.com.co, it appears that they are still running these deals to selected cities. Like Satena, they mainly fly to smaller cities that aren't normally serviced by the bigger airlines. I don't think they fly out of Medellin yet.

Also, the uniform for the stewardesses is short shorts and high heels. That isn't exactly a negative.

Easy Fly will begin flights out of Medellin in two weeks to Bogota and beyond.

There are numerous good offers on flights in and around Colombia and out of Colombia lately. I get three daily papers delivered to the hostel and especially on Wednesday and Thursday a lot of good deals are offered. Last week you could have picked up Medellin - Lima direct for only US$210 return including all taxes. Rio and BA were going at US$430 including everything return. Also Aires is starting direct flights to Medellin, Aero Republica and Avianca are about to go head to head on direct flights to Caracas. A direct flight to Christchurch and we will be in business. For the past year Medellin - Madrid has been available at US$740 return incl all taxes also.. But it seems to have gone.

Satena fly direct to Medellin, Easy fly will stop in coffee country, Aires flies through Ibague or coffee country.

Aires also has some very good fares available from Medellin at present

I will say that in my experience, Aires has excellent customer service and is very willing to please. On several occasions, my wife or I have not used tickets that we paid for with Aires. On every occasion, we have been able to easily call up and have them give us credit for those unused flights. They've even allowed us to use the credit for other people.

I even been looking into Spirit from FLL and connect on Aires from Cartegena into the Local Medellin airport...but the times are not very good...So still on the Rio Negro bandwagon..

Speaking of Aires, I recall that they were supposedly bidding for a Colombia - US route of some sort. Any idea how that ended up?

Just checked aires on line - thought I was onto an even better thing - price 120,000 med to Bog (via manizales) but with taxes ended up bein 231,560.00 CO - bummer. Hopefully easyfly will be med to bog by the 27th - will check that out. A 10 k ticket would be lush!!

I suspect it was pure rumor. Absolutely nothing on the US Dept. of Transportation website, which is where all potential route submissions are posted.

www.dot.gov. Use the search function.

toneloc24 says on May 13, 2008, 12:40:

Yeah, I keep an eye on that site.

There are strong rumors being floated about some major US airlines about to apply for the Colombian "open skies" market, which is what Spirit took advantage of first. I believe those "open skies" cities are only be Barranquilla and Cartagena.

Medellin, Cali, etc.? I wouldn't hold my breath since those 21 new routes, plus AA's forfeited 7 routes were just awarded, and only to/from Bogota. We'll see what transpires.

also...not impressed with the SATENA fares after researching the site.

The "lovemedellin website" is a piece of crap made by some moron who has only been to Medellin once...you'd be better off reading the Lonely Planet advice from a guy who never even came here!

While in Medellin in april, i was talking to a pilot for Aires in the apartment building and he said flights from MDE to Ft Lauderdale hopefully by end of summer.. That would be nice, since Jet Blue hasnt even thought about service to Col since they were awarded rights to fly South..

what kind of aircraft does easy fly use?

ColombianoGringo says on May 18, 2008, 20:02:

Oh hell bro, you got me on that one. I think they are like the Fokers and Embraers used by Aires and Satena for short hops. I just reserved a flight for my wife from Southern Colombia to Bogota for $175.000 including all taxes and surcharges. The actual fare was only 20.000.

I looked it up, and apparently they use British Aerospace Jetstream 41 aircraft.
