Chase debit card fees

I was a member of WAMU, which is now Chase. Did my first ATM withdraw of 400,000 in Cali and got charged $ 6.04 plus $ 3.00 for a Non-Chase ATM. Obviously, I need to change banks. Any recommendations?

I use National Inter Bank also. You can join online.

I don’t know on direct transfers. I only use Interbank for vacations. I usually just send them a check from my normal local bank account a couple weeks before I leave. You can set up direct deposit into it, if you have a pension or SS and just use the card in Colombia to live. I have been transferring money via our Interbank account to a Colombian ATM and into our Colombian bank account every time we go down.

I got a Capital One ATM card a few months ago in part for the advice I'd read earlier here. In past years, I've had no problem with my NC SECU credit union card, they charge 1% conversion fee plus .75 for using another ATM. My only worry has been, what if I lose that card? I imagine most of you carry a couple of ATM cards for that purpose.

I got the CAP1 card thinking I could make transfers from my regular account online and use either card as needed. It works fine, except that there is a significant delay with CAP 1. If I do the transfer online on Mon, it may or may be available until Friday. Also, I had to call several times about getting charged twice for the same ATM withdrawal. To their credit, it looks like they have credited back to my account, but they give you a CURRENT balance and an AVAILABLE balance, and it isn't available yet. It looks like they give you a good exchange rate on your withdrawals.

lol we sound like a commercial here. CG, I understand the delay, system, etc. But my experience has been about 5 business days on average. It may post to my account after 3 business days, but it is not necessarily available for me to withdraw for 2 business days more. That's been my experience, anyway. I don't really criticize that. The main thing I wanted from them was someone to fallback on in case I lost my primary ATM. Also, having heard about paseo de milionario, I thought if they tried that with me with my Cap1 card they wouldn't get very far. (Not that I was REALLY worried about that).

Use citibank ATM if they have one in Cali and take out 1,000,000 COP in one transaction which will bring your fees down.

Fidelity looks good:

All Fidelity ATM withdrawal fees will be waived for your mySmart Cash Account®. In addition, your mySmart Cash Account® will automatically be reimbursed for all ATM fees charged by other institutions while using a Fidelity Visa® Gold Check Card linked to your mySmart Cash Account® at any ATM displaying the Visa®, PLUS® or STAR® logos. Please note, there is a foreign transaction fee of one percent that is not waived, which will be included in the amount charged to your account. Fidelity does charge fees....they charge a 1 % conversion fee whenever u use an international ATM. I just called them up today and talked to a banker. I am still going to go with them as thats much better than $5 on EVERY international transaction from Wells Fargo, no matter how big or small.

It is a strict per case basis. I just used them last month and I got NO FEES and a very good conversion rate.. I also got into a long discussion with the lady on the phone who told me that she knows many people in her office that use it specifically when they travel to avoid the fees..

Account the same day the ATM fee is debited from the account. Please note
that Visa does charge a foreign transaction fee of 1%, which is not waived, and
will be included in the amount charged to your account." I dont understand how its a per case basis....

I mean, what did you tell her to get that type of deal? I dont understand that if its written in the customers agreement that they charge a currency conversion fee of 1 % at all international ATMs. In my case, I will be living in colombia....not vacationing so I expect to use the debit card a lot. No minimum balance, no maintenance fee, and little or no charge on international ATMs is what I am looking for.

Apeters.. I too have heard all of this info from the operator and read all of this as well.. so I tried it out myself too see what the real deal was.. The lady from Fidelity told me it depends on the bank in Colombia whether or not they choose to charge you the 1% or not and it is a very grey area.. I USED.. banco de bogota and banco avillas and there where NO ADDITIONAL charges.. No bank fees, no hidden charges, no charges that came later on, no foreign transaction fees a month later or at the end of my statement. AND on top of that it was paying me like 2250.. and that was the market price around that time..
