I'm visiting Colombia in a few months and am wondering what the best--AND CHEAPEST-- thing to do about my American cell phone is:
1) Expand my plan to cover me in Colombia
2) Buy a cell phone in Colombia
Thanks!

If yes, then check on the internet if your phone can be unlocked (there are web sites that will list phones that can, and can not be unlocked). Most better quality phones can be unlocked. If it can be unlocked, bring your phone to Colombia and get it unlocked for $10, then buy a sim for $7. Go to any private or major store and they will tell you someone that will unlocked it for you. I got mine unlocked at the Buena Vista mall in Barranquilla. There is always some emloyee that is involved with cell phones that can, with a phone call, able to get it unlocked. There is nothing illegal about the whole process. Unlocking is just a trade secret that the cell networks do not want you to do.
