Cell Phone Surprise

I ran into a pleasant surprise last night accidentally

Last night I used my speed dial on my cell phone to call my daughter here in North Carolina and mistakingly dialed my wifes number who is currently in Cali visiting her family. To my surprise my wife answered.....where are you I asked, she said in Uni Centro...WOW.

I had no idea that by calling my wife on her North Carolina cell phone number that it would ring in Colombia. From what I have read the two cell phone systems were not compatable. I am using Verizon Wireless.

I called Verizon today and they told me that was impossible. The systems are not compatable. I called her again today to verify and it worked again.

Does anybody have any experiences like this? I asked Verizon what the roaming charges were while in Colombia but they said that they did not have a clue as it will not work.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Michael

Any chance she set her NC phone up to forward to a Colombian number?

Wait till you get the bill.

When I was in Colombia my phone would ring, but I was afraid to pick it up. I eventually turned off the phone. The next month I got a large phone bill. Something about my phone picking the voice mail even though I was in Colombia. I called and had them remove the charges.

They work if you have international roaming. With Sprint it is about $2 a minute. I've received phone calls in Colombia, but I usually leave my phone in airplane mode while I'm there to avoid getting calls.

Michael................pretty much all phones work anywere nowadays...............however the roaming charges are big...............the $2 ColombianoGringo speaks about above actually turns into almost $2.50 per minute or part of minute when all the various taxes and Federal charges are included......................so your chit chat with herself in uni centro.......what ........10 mins.............$25............you cant text her for 20cents

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

I have Sprint as well and the $2 charge is only the roaming charge. They will still charge you for long distance and then the various charges and taxes. I'm holding my breath to see how much they are going to whack me for the several calls that I made before I bought a simm card for my other phone.

I just looked at an old Sprint bill with Colombia roaming and I was not charged anything above the $1.99 a minute. I had 26 minutes of calls and was charged $51.74.

All calls in the detailed billing printout have a column for "LD/Additional Charges", but there were none of these charges for my roaming calls. I'm sure I paid sales tax on top of that, but that is true of most purchases.

CG, maybe I won't be as surprised as I expect. I looked at my last bill and when I was in the Dominican Republic, I was charged $1.99 a minute for calls to the US and for local calls in DR. When I made a call to Colombia, I was charged $11.94 for 6 minutes and $3.35 for LD/Additional Charges. Luckily, I couldn't figure out how to make overseas calls when I was in Colombia. I resorted to using Yahoo Messenger on my laptop.

Panthdave, I was wondering about the the service thing. I was in Bogota on July 27 and again on July 31. I was in Santa Marta July 27-30. I made a few calls. My bill runs to the 2nd of August. When I got my bill, no calls made in Colombia were included. I just figured that they didn't hit Sprint in time to be included on the bill; so I'm waiting for Septembers bill to see what happens.

With at&t, I had no service in Bogota at all. I guess it's a good thing considering the bill I would have got.

Did you activate the service which you need to do...Trust me they love it if you activate they make a killing..and if so your phone needs to be turned to automatic roaming or roaming service allowed.

I've called Colombia for the last three years using my cell phone. I don't have a land line in the U.S.

Cingular (now AT&T) has a plan for international calling with a rate of $ 0.18 per minute to call land lines.

Cell phones cost more per minute but I don't call cell phones.

I use a card to call cell phones, sometimes land lines but the lines can be bad and I don't really care about saving $0.10 per minute. I think the card is about .12 cents per minute for cell phones and .08 (or less for land lines).

I'd ass_ume the average female cell phone holder owner keeps the ring tone on vibrate,, hummm maybe I need to ask?

Poco there talking roaming access with a US Phone in Colombia...

Sprint is .18 landline and .20 Cellphone...from my Cellular on a 4.00 plan..

I use to use a thousand different cards and 800 services promising good service they all suck..When I call I need a good connection, no busy signal, no stuttering from the VOIP services, just prefer the good ole telephone connection clear and open lines to call. I have Vonage connected in my Medellin house thats the only one I use to call my house via a local Miami number but otherwise calling other numbers in Colombia use Sprint..
Clear and Good.

Sprint charges me $.19 a minute from the US to Colombia to either landline or cell. I verified this against my bill. For the international calling service, you have to pay $4 a month.

I will occasionally use it to call to a cell. The Sprint service will always connect even when my prepaid services are having trouble connecting, and it always sounds good. Consequently, it is worth paying the $4 a month to have the Sprint international service as a reliable backup.

Funny Colombiano Sprint is charging me .18 to a landline and .20 to cellphone on that 4.00 plan...Just paid a 70.00 Cellphone bill but like you said it is a very reliable LD Service and Clear...cannot stand those prepaid VOIP Services...if they were clear like Vonage I would do it but there not...tried many

ColombianoGringo says on Aug 26, 2007, 12:50:

Weird. I mostly call cell phones and get charged .19 by Sprint.

I use CrossFone Rapifone for landlines. It is VOIP, but it is basically unlimited and I call all over Colombia with no problems. Using VOIP services to cell phones is more of a crap shoot. I pay .09 a minute to cell with Pingo, which has been pretty decent. I used to use Tel3, but their service has really gotten unreliable and expensive lately.

For some reason, Sprint also puts a 15% discount on most sections of my bill, but not on the international calls. I have no idea why, but far be it from me to bitch about it since it is applied to every other part of my bill.

ColombianoGringo,

I have Sprint and pay 17 cents a minute to Colombia landlines and 03 cents a minute to cell phones. FWIW, that matches the figures on their international rates page.

http://nextelonline.nextel.com/en/services/worldwide/ratesfromus.shtml...

Re the 15% discount on your basic plan but not the "pay by the minute" usage - it sounds like you're getting one of their "value" or "employee discount" plans. If you work for a large organization and your employer buys from Sprint, it's pretty easy to get an 8-15% discount. I get a 10% discount through Sprint, if I signed up with Verizon I'd get 15%.

Edit: The first part should read "an additional 3 cents a minute" to mobile phones = 20 cents total.

panthdave says on Aug 26, 2007, 13:40:

Sprint won't give me any discounts because I am on a Sprint employee plan like working for Sprint only..Very cheap..I use to have a Sprint Store with inclusive rights because there was no corporate sprint store around funny huh and they put me like a Sprint employee as benefits but I was an owner and had all liability and closed down when the Merger happened but they allowed to keep the phone plan as a Sprint employee...
