Cedula?

Please excuse my ignorance but I've been coming across this mentioned in some postings regarding travelling through certain areas and to have one handy. (I certainly don't plan on entering any areas that may be considered dangerous at the time when I'm travelling through, I figure there will be enough to see as it is.) Is this some sort of ID required for travellers as well as Colombians? Just trying to get it right so I can be prepared. Could someone please shed some light on this matter for me? Gracias.

It's a Colombian Thing, I don't think you can get a cedula, which is like a national identity card, unless you are Colombian or an alien resident.

Thanks Platano That's more or less what I figured but I wanted to be sure. Thanks for clearing that up.

ID The bottom line is that the Colombian police has the authority to randomly ask any person to produce a legal form of ID. This can happen anywhere, in cities and countryside alike, so you do need to carry one with you at all times. For Colombians, that would be a Cédula de Ciudadanía; for foreign residents it would be a Cédula de Extranjería; for foreign visitors it would be a passport. You may get away with showing a photocopy (preferably notarized) which, considering the risk of carrying your passport around, would be a good idea. But you would run the risk of running into a nasty cop who might not accept it; I'd say it's a rather small risk though.
