As far as I know the Cédula number is a citizen's private and protected information. Think Social Security number. Of course, I'm sure many people at DAS could do it and I'm also pretty sure it's illegal.

a cedula is the least private or protected ID in Colombia....the cedula is used to pay 1,700 pesos for a doctor appointment...the cedual number or even a copy of the cedual is left in almost every business establishment through out the country...as far as I am concerned my visa card is a much better ID than my cedula in this country...the cedual is nothing but a big joke in Colombia.....and they use it to vote to hahahahaha.....and the DAS looking up a cedula number would not be illegal if done a letter from the court

In this case, the mother is being told that she needs the cedula number in order to file the case. I don't know if this is the letter of the law, but as we all know, rules and regulations can change at the whim of the lowliest bureaucrat.

Since nobody knows of a lookup service, I will just ask the lady I know in DAS to help.

Try this on-line site all in Spanish of course: Registrador Nacional del Estado Civil at http://www.registraduria.gov.co/ look on the upper right for CéDULA DE CIUDADANA
This will answer 99% of cédula questions and if you are replacing a cédula you can put in you present cédula number, it never changes, and find out the status.

For this she should have an attorney who can easily get the number through the court.
