Cedula Extranjería

I've read that a person with the right visas, can get a Cedula after 60days living in Colombia. I was wondering if it was possible to get it sooner or is that the only way. I'm sure that I can't just get married and then go down the street the same day and pick one up. I'm looking at someday buying a house and living with my wife in Colombia and I know that all the banking stuff needs to be done too and just to do about anything else is next to impossible with out it.

What has been the experience of others going through the process of getting the foreigner card? How long it took and such.

Cedula Extranjería When I got my visa I was told by the Consulate to apply after I was in Colombia for 6 months. However once I got to Colombia several expats that I became friendly with told my you must apply within the first 2 months. My wife and I trudged down to DAS and they were right. Within the first 2 months. I will not swear to this but I think, biased on my dealings with DAS that you can apply almost as soon as you arrive. It takes a couple of weeks to get it anyway as they are all issued in Bogotá. The first time you go they will give you a list of stuff you have to bring back on your next visit. This was the routine in Cartagena; I can't speak for other cities.

Dan Dear Dan,

I remember that you must register immediately with the DAS after entering Colombia with your new visa after which you can apply for a cedula which you will probably never receive. When you apply for the cedula you will receive a tempory (CE) cedula that is good for a period of one year. You will be told that the perminent (CE) cedula (good for a year) will come in about 8 months. After going through this three times I never received but one perminent (CE) cedular in 2001 which was expired before I every received it. All my experience were with business visas in the DAS offices of Medellin. People in the DAS offices in Medellin have always been very helpful and polite.

You may ask. DAS stands for: Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad and the office in Cartagena is located in Pie de la Popa.
