Cash or C.C.?

Hi everyone, My trip to Colombia is just around the corner and I have a big "Dilema". I don't know if I should take cash or my debit/credit (Master Card)card from the North Fork Bank (USA), I dont know if the ATM's in Colombia will allow me to use my card.
Please let my know based on your experiences what should I do.

Thank you.

No question Cash is trading at about a 14% discount to the bank rate right now. So confirm with your home bank that they'll allow your ATM to work in foreign machines (it's their issue, not with the machines here, which work with lots of international networks). Withdraw cash from an ATM for walking around money and the best thing is to use a credit card for major purchases.

If your Bank is part of Cirrus or Plus, there... should'nt be any problems.

Debit card is best I live here and use a debit/Visa check card with no problems. I have found that the Servibanca (green colored tellers) are the best. They will not charge a transaction fee upon withdrawal but your bank will charge you on your statement. It is rougly $1 per transaction, including checking your balance.

You should make sure if it is a debit card that it has the cirrus logo on it, you will have no problems with mastercard & visa credit cards.

Poor but snappy

BANKING IN COLOMBIA Just a reminder that when you use a credit card at points of sale in Colombia you must have some id on you and they will also ask you "cuantas cuotas", because in Colombia you can divide the purchase in instalments. So 2 cuotas will mean the credit being repayed in full after 2 months. So to this question you just have to say 1.

Also with debit cards/checking cards (maestro/visa electron) used at points of sale in shops, your 4 digit pin must be punched in to authorise the sale and a sales slip signed too.

Exchange rates I recommend you use the ATM instead of bringing cash. You will get more pesos for every dollar this way (as opposed to bringing dollars and exchanging them in a casa de cambio)

and If your hotel bill is quoted in dollars, it is ok to take dollars down to pay it with.

Using credit cards is ok for purchases, but many banks charge yet ANOTHER fee for doing this...on top of all the other fees.
