"It doesn't look beautiful! It looks like a bunch of prison cell buildings! Look at all the little windows! Is there a glass shortage or just 3'rd world BS building techniques to save money?"

Where did this cockroach crawl out from under?

I also happen to think the skyline looks marvelous! Of course there are some who cringe at the thought of Colombia becoming more modern and prosperous, these people are no friends of Colombia.

Thanks for the interesting photos of the modern skyline of of Cartagena. The "other side" of Cartagena is the old walled city, and the sights there are: interesting, historic and romantic. A great city, one of the most beautiful in the Western Hemisphere.

Enjoy hundreds of pages, and thousands of photos of Cartagena at:

Tks.

It certainly does not, close up. Cartagena is beautiful! Whereas, . . . . . .

I was referring to Panama City's skyline, which is the most impressive in Latin America.

sloopskipper says on Apr 20, 2009, 17:02:

Yes, of course Simon.

I agree, but close up is not so pretty, with little evidence that the Spanairds were ever here here and little green space (of course Bush 41 destoyed much). Many open maholes in the streets and sewage in the bay (but that will disappear).

It is amazing what this tiny country has accomplished.

Seems that some people think "everybody's outa step but me".

The Stealths were not very discriminating in '89.

Thousands of innocents were killed, and bulldozed into mass graves, or their bodies tossed out to sea for the sharks.

Seems that some people think "everybody's outa step but me".

You would think they would create more open space.

Cartagena developed? What you see there is 0.001% of Cartagena. The rest of it is little less developed-always consider both sides.

Skyline shmyline. Great cities don't need impressive skylines to be great - look at Paris, Amsterdam, etc. What do I care what a place looks like from kilometers away? When I go to visit a place, I am not sitting in a boat or in a hot air ballon from 5 miles away admiring it.

When am visiting I am IN the city. I want walkable, interesting, relatively clean, and full of character, broad varieties of shopping, broad varieties of restaurants, to see a signs of a diverse economy and a diverse representation of locals.

So much new development is just so much of the same in different parts of the world. What is the point of going to Panama city if a street in Panama is indistinguishable from Cartagena or Miami or San Jose? A truly sophisticated city stays in touch with it's roots and promotes development of it's own unique style that is complimentary to it's setting and surrounding buildings - rather than blindly building copies of buildings that exist in umpteen other cities around the world under some misguided guise of progress.

adrimm- you do have some points about the city...

of course- an impressive skyline adds to the beauty of a city...IMO...

in Houston- the skyline is quite impressive and quite expansive- if i could change one thing about Houston's skyline, I'd make 1 large downtown...
not downtown, galleria, medical center and all points around...

of course the cities of Europe do not have skylines and are still great cities- yet that is because the cities were built far before the cities in the west...

even still- most cities in NA are not walkable, nor full of character or some of the other points you made...

Cartagena's skyline is still quite impressive nontheless...
