Carnival

Colombia is famous for having 365 carnivals or festivals, one for each day of the year. Is there anywhere with a defintive (or at least mostly comprehensive) list?

And if not, then THIS can be the place to make such a list, surely between us all we can start to build it up.

I will start us off with a few:

Bogota Birthday (6th August): Celebrating the founding of the city of Santafe de Bogota. I was there for the 465th in 2003, there was a big festival in Parque de Bolivar with live music and fireworks. Last year I was in Bogota shopping and the supermarkets were giving out free slices of birthday cake.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin (15th August): I don't know how it is celebrated across the country but in my village there is a procession carrying a statue of Mary through the village and then up into the mountains to the boundary of the village limits, followed by a Mass held right there in the roadside.

Lisa, if you like peace and quiet... when you go to Colombia, you need to avoid Cali. For me, when I drive in from the airport and approach Cali's outskirts and start hearing salsa blasting from every business establishment, regardless of what they sell, and all the cars honking and the general chaos, not to mention the sweet smell of the sugar fields mixed in with smoke of the burning detriutus of the harvested sugar fields, then I know I'm home.

Hopefully Kat1 will be able to give more details. There is a huge festivo in Villavicencio around October 10th or so. I have no idea what the exact dates are or what it is for, but the whole city goes crazy. People come down from Bogota, the main streets are closed to traffic, and every horse that lives within 200 km is in Villavo with a drunken Llanero riding. Then, there are cars and trucks filled with people throwing eggs, flour, and water on each other and at the spectators on the sidewalks. I just got with my sources ... the name might be "festival mundial del coleo". A popular sport for this festival is similar to tackling cattle, but the the person rides a horse high speed, and grabs onto a running steer's tail and drags it down by the tail. I would wager the hospitals have good business that week. I witnessed a truck filled with 15 kids, probably 16 years old on average, almost run over several military guys walking across calle 15 at the wrong time. They dove to avoid the truck, brushed themselves off, laughed, and acted like nothing had happened.

Take a look a las "Monas," the blonde Colombian girls in action.
Tambien Caeras - Jun10 - Las Monas

http://www.festivalinternational.com/site.php is what I meant; pretty cool front page tonight.
Humbled, that it is in my home town, but this festival grows and gets better year by year. An International crowd is gathering.

Was funny, though. Last night,... The guys playing those Bolivian wind flutes and the street corner, claimed to be from Arizona.

Thanks for the link Rodrigo, very useful, but I was thinking of making this thread a little more descriptive than just a try list, such as the videos that have been posted.

Colombia is such a big country and so different region to region that I'm sure all the different carnivals and festivals have their own character.

I remember when I was a kid (c. 1992), a carnival in the village, I think it was Columbus Day, and there were various floats representing the history of Colombia and the Americas, with lots of different costumes.

I think embedded photos in this message board is frowned upon right? So link instead:

The following was in Plaze de Bolivar 2003. I didn't find out what it was for, but then that's what's so great about Colombia, lets have a party because we feel like!

I rather suspect they were supposed to represent African slaves? Not very PC but as I said this was the early 90s (and indeed if that is the reason, I doubt it was intended offensively)
