Last night my new wife (1 month) and I went to the Carlos Vives concert at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. Before the show we stopped off at the crowded CNN center to get a sandwich. There were lots of people there because the punk rock band Green Day was playing. I have to say I was happy to be with the 2,000 seeing Carlos Vives instead of the 15,000 (?) seeing Green Day.
The 15,000 were there to see a snarling sarcastic, cynical punk rock group whose latest album is called American Idiot. Carlos Vives sang lots of upbeat, optimistic music mixing in lots of different elements of music from different cultures of Colombia.
Could you imagine going to a rock concert in the US where all the young adults were wearing and waving their country's flag?

Colombiche says on Aug 24, 2005, 10:52: I would rather see Carlos Vives too! I had enough of those American punkrockers when I was a misguided teenage girl who was having problems adjusting to her environment. No me den trago extranjero, que es caro y no sabe a bueno.... Miguel says on Aug 24, 2005, 11:40: Greenday/Carlos Vives Greenday is not my cup of tea, but they are pretty much in touch with the frustration we gringos from the blue states have with the current administration. Do I have a copy of "American Idiot" by Greenday? No. Do I have a copy of "El rock de mi pueblo" de Carlos? Si señor. And as far as seeing a concert in The States with people waving the American flag, go to listen to "The Boss".

Colombiche says on Aug 24, 2005, 12:53: Miguel I grew up in Canada, used to listen to that kind of music and attend all the concerts when I was a teen, even much more underground stuff than greenday. That is why I think I get it. The way I see it, one is music full of negativity, the other is positive music that emanates happiness. I feel this way about it, maybe other people don't. meteoro says on Aug 24, 2005, 14:30: This is totally an apples-to-oranges comparison. Carlos Vives is great and so is Green Day. But you can't put them side by side, they inhabit two different worlds. Now, if I had to make a choice I would go to the Green Day concert.

kernow62 says on Aug 24, 2005, 14:58: I'm with you meteoro, how can you compare two different sorts of music and say this artist is better than the other. I personally like the more raw vallenatos and cumbias as opposed to the more polished Carlos Vives sound.

babygirl says on Aug 24, 2005, 15:37: Carlos Vives is fantastic but you can't compare the two. I've seen plenty of American flag waving and wearing too. These guys are very patriotic. I have yet to find a binki with Canada flags..but plenty of option with the stars & stripes. cheers 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

platano says on Aug 30, 2005, 12:09: Salsa!!! But since neither of these plays salsa... I prefer that music of another Colombian singer: Maria Olga Piñeros. I don't think she has been discussed on PBH. Just was listening to her singing "La Copla del Ordeño". She has a beautiful voice and plays tiple, cuatro, guitar and percussion.

guitos44 says on Aug 31, 2005, 16:43: What Are You Talking About I'm from Colombia and I;ve listen to Carlos Vives all my life. I really like his music, a lot. He plays Ballenato wich is Colombia's native music. I also like Rock. So I like Green Day. Green Day is Punk Rock not Ballenato. How can you compare Ballenato with Punk Rock. You play Ballenato with gitars, maracas, flutes, guitars, and other Colombian instruments. You play Punk Rock with a guitar, bass and drums. How can you compare that to the other. And another thing if you saw people with American Flags were people that are against Green Day. Because the song American Idiot it's about how the US is not represented by the President, and that song is Anti-Bush for your information. So when you are going to debate something please do some research people.

Mr. Hollywood says on Aug 31, 2005, 17:15: Somehow I don't think Mr. Vives or the guys in Green Day see the world in the stark oppositional terms that the original poster does.
